Archive for December, 2007
“Don’t Tase me, Bro.” is being heralded as the top quote of 2007. Who would have guessed that? Well, some tried to in early 2007. Predicting the future is not just a psychics’ job. Then again, we are not predicting – we are analyzing - Seeing trends in the last year to determine what is coming out next year.
I went through some of the predictions of 2007. Some were dead on. Social Networking and Apple devices seemed to top the list in this subject. Other predictions – well, not so much.
Now we are fast approaching 2008. There is a lot of technology that was debuted in 2007 and since they are still in their infant stages, we will see them ramp into tools that change the way we compute. 2007 was also a year of rethinking. Going Green is one of the ways we rethought things. We definitely had some good progress and will continue the trend.
So what is in store for 2008? I paneled my fellow techies at http://www.techpodcasts.com/ and we came up with some items to think about for this New Year. So let’s go through the list.

Here is the half hour I spent with Todd online talking about Geekazine. My voice is a little choppy - I believe that was due to bandwidth problems. Check out all the segments over at http://www.24hrpodcast.com/
Everyone puts them out; the best - and worst - of 2007, all in one article. And Geekazine is no different. However, we’re taking a slightly different approach. It’s more of a look back to see what has happened in the last year and maybe some hints for what should be done in 2008. Gets you wondering what items you lived without a year ago and what you can’t live without today. So without further ado….
Let’s start with the beginning of the year. It was good. PS3 came out in the console wars, and it was predicted that it will win out of the 3 game systems. That still has to happen. SSD was introduced at CES, and it was tech that is long overdue. The static drives can reduce heat, battery consumption and wait times loading the machine. The technology is slowly coming down to earth prices, and when it does, watch out America.

I remember back in 1999 I resolved to give up Mountain Dew for a year (which I was addicted to) and reduce the amount of caffeine I drank. I also resolved to drink more water, and switch to a diet soft drink (which I couldn’t stand to drink before that). At the beggining of the new year, I finished my last Dew and went on the change. My result was that I didn’t drink Dew all year and slowly weened myself on diet soda, starting with 5% diet - 95% cola, then slowly changing the percentages.
I also remember 2001 when I told myself I would quit smoking. That didn’t last a week.
Everybody makes resolutions. Doesn’t have to be on January 1st - it can be during a birthday, anniversary, religious holiday or a life changing event. Whether your resolution helps you with health, money or whatever, it’s something you not only feel the need to change but also want to stick with changing.
A resolution is a self check - to be able to see if you can change something about oneself. With so much pressure out there, this becomes a quest to see if adversity can be overcome. Sometimes we hear about how people stuck with their resolution and a difference is seen. We also hear time and time again when people fail. Why?
You can follow the show here on Geekazine. I will be on at 9:30 PM EST. Show starts @ 11AM EST.

Congratulations, Todd for a show well done. Geekazine.
For the last ten years, Duke Nukem has been promising “Duke Nukem Forever” - the sequel to the 3D first player game. Now it looks like the game has finally grown some legs. Does this show that Vaporware can possibly become reality?
The long awaited sequel started back in 1997. Using the Quake II Engine - basically a licensed program within the game itself which runs the 3-D realm - the game was going to continue the saga between Nukem and Dr. Proton - Nukems’ original arch nemesis. The plan was to release the game by 1998.

Are you a Computer Geek? A Sports Geek? A Medical Geek? Maybe you’re just a Geeks’ Geek. Then Geekazine wants you.
Geekazine will be starting a weekly interview show hilighting the Geeks in all of us. If you are especially talented in a specific field, then please email me: geekazine@gmail.com Put in the subject line - I’m a geek.
From Early days, man has tried to collect and record information and put it in an easy to read volume set to sell to the masses for profit. Well, maybe not like that, but it’s turned into a business. Since the inception of the internet, an online encyclopedia has been attempted and with Wikipedia, some will say it’s a great resource for free. Now Google wants in on it by creating their own online knowledge base called “Knol”. Is this really a good idea or should we focus efforts on what is out there already?
Yeah, I Remember the Encyclopedia Britannica kid? This was an ad back in the early 90’s featuring a kid and an announcer that promoted the multi-volume Encyclopedia Britannica. The kid, Donavan Freberg, and the announcer, his dad – Stan Freberg were the duo that promoted this volume library.
