Last night I implemented the new design. It’s using the Gabfire template with some major tweaking on this end. It was a result from all the great feedback you guys gave over the last few months. I worked pretty dilligently over the last few weeks to get this page together.

The most noticable difference is the load time. It was important to get the page to load faster. This new template is more organized and I’ve noticed the difference.

There are still a few tweaks I need to work on but the general result is what I intended. I hope you like the new look. Feel free to comment on it – Good or Bad.

Dorkazine will go through a similar redesign – for now it’s still on the old look.

Items Discussed:

IBM 701

Star Wars and more Star Wars (movie releases)

First Flights of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart

Atom Bombs

MySQL

ToySmart.com

Disney and Mickey Mouse

Microsoft OLPC

Prosecute Fake Myspace Profiles

This last week I saw an interesting trend. Various websites I visited all of a sudden looked different. They ditched their old design and brought a new look to their WebPages. Even here at Geekazine, we are a few days away from introducing a new look. So why did everybody choose this time to change?

I remember back when the web was in its infancy, I read an interesting article where they asked the question – When is the best time to redesign your site? They suggested that if you redesign it too much too quickly, people will start to get turned off and decide to travel elsewhere on the information superhighway.

However, sometimes a redesign is what’s needed to bring more traffic. Moving items in a “More ergonomical” fashion might give a site a better ease of use, therefore people will choose your site over the competitors. And of course, more viewers may mean more money – in theory at least.

Slower week. Got a lot done though. www.Dorkazine.com is back up and running. New theme is going well, too. I hope to have it done by the end of next week.

- The site suffered a small problem as I deleted the wrong file. Thank goodness for backups! Got it back up and running with only a very small data loss.

- Also found a Wordpress glitch that, if you read this in Internet Explorer, caused the site to not load fully. I have documented it and sent it to Wordpress.com.

- I felt my Main podcast was probably the best one I hae done without too many stops. Feel free to let me know what you like or don’t like about it – or any of the site.

- Brokenshovel helped me pick a winner for the Zune or iPod. Winner got back to me and we are working out the details. I will be making an official announcement soon.

- Worked on a new website. More in the coming weeks, but it’s a business venture with another person. Should be cool.

- The 5 minute show “Dude, Where’s my Cell Phone?” is quickly becoming the most downloaded episode. if you haven’t heard it, then go to http://www.geekazine.com/5minpod/dude-wheres-my-cell-phone-we-dont-leave-home-without-it to listen.

- Been Dog sitting for the week because a friend has a mouse problem. Gracie has been a welcome diversion for the week. Now, as I write this, it looks like she will be here a little longer than expected. Sweet!

- Grand Theft Auto seems to be my other diversion this week. So far a pretty decent game. I crashed an Ambulance in the water, then swam out to sea. I never got stopped. That was sweet.

- Vocalo.org apparently updated their website. An official announcement will be out shortly. So far it looks pretty sweet. Will continue to make Vocalo segments as time will allow.

- Recorded a song I wrote back in Feb. Still in the mixing production. It’s sounding better every day.

That’s it for now. Should be a stellar week coming up. Remember – LIVE SHOW on Monday. 25 people in the show and I’m gonna give away something. Will also attempt an idea I have. So tune in and check it out.

It’s a special Bitstrips because this one hits true to most geeks. Thanks to mnyassh for letting me use it.

evolution of man

A lot of tech companies traded like a high stakes poker game. Of course this is not unusal for companies to buy other companies – It is interesting to see who bought what. It makes for the big question: Will the new parent company keep their new child or will we see it in a dumpster next week?

Let’s start with the big one: HP buys EDS. On Tuesday, HP laid down 12.6 Billion to purchase Electronic Data Systems. This is a move to catapult HP into a position to compete with IBM’s markets.

Created in 1962 by Ross Perot – the Billionaire that ran for President in 1992 (and took about 18.9 percent of the vote). Ross Started EDS after departing from IBM. His first big contract was in computerizing Medicare Records from the Government. In 1968 EDS went public and shares went from $16 to $160.

Maybe someday I’ll get to sit and talk with Steve Jobs. Until then I’ll have to make up the interview in my head. Because there has been talk of the new iPhone coming out on June 9th. Also there has been talk of Apple getting the gamers with a new handheld system. So I just had to ask Steve….

New iPhone coming?

Today I was working on the site and the delete button jumped up and bit me! OW!

We had a small issue, and I had to restore the backup database. There were a couple tables that were restored from the weekly backup. There should be no data loss, but if you signed up for the site this week, you may have to do it again.

Speaking of signups – Some have been asking about the iPodZune Contest info. According to the rules I set up (found on the Giveaway Rules Page) I will be choosing a winner today. I will email that user and they will have 7 days to respond. Once a winner is acknowledged, I will post the results.

NEWay, thanks for being a part of the site and participating in the contest. I have taken your information to heart and will be using it down the road.
