What I first talk about is an app that will help you make a card for your Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day Card Creator by Big Blue Clip has two versions – a Lite version and full version (.99). Just like other card creation software, you start by putting down the background. You place the stamps of different images all over the page. Choose items from your image library to give it a more personal touch. Add text and voila! You have the perfect Mother’s Day card!

I am still not a fan of the iPad mini. I know it may be a great gift but the iPad mini 2nd generation is right around the corner. If you can wait, it would make a better Christmas present than Mother’s Day.

Virtual Active for iPad

I took a challenge this month to walk 10,000 steps (which you can follow on twitter at #10000steps).  If it wasn’t for my treadmill I might have missed this mark. But walking on a treadmill can be annoyingly tedious.

Therefore, I downloaded Virtual Active by Active Theory Inc. This app allows me to pull up a scene to walk or run. Once I choose my location, the app starts tracking your movement via camera to pace the video with your walk or run.

Set the time, walk or run through the Grand Canyon. There are in-app purchases of other scenes to run through ($7.99 each).

I also show you the Fitbug by Fitbug Ltd- a device I got at CES to monitor my steps while at the show. I am using Fitbug to keep track of my steps. Bluetooth connection allows me to download to my phone and see how far I’ve stepped.

Bossjock Studio for iPad

In 2005, recording a podcast required getting a few items including a mixer, microphone and a computer that could handle audio recording. Times have changed as now you can get a high quality USB microphone and iPad to record from. Now all you need is the program that makes it easy to make the podcast.

Enter in Bossjock studio by the bossjocks. This app has it all for an audio podcaster. A sound board so you can play music and other effects, volume controls to raise mic, music or mix, a ducking option so you can talk over the music, low pass filter, low buffer (for older iPads or those iOS devices which don’t have an A6 processor in them) and much more.

This app has everything an audio podcaster would want. Just plug in a microphone (or use the Apple headphones) and get ready to do a show.

iPad Podcast Accessories in this Episode

For this episode I use the Apple Lightning to USB Camera Adapter which is plugged into an Audio-Technica ATR2100-USB/XLR Microphone. The music in this podcast was created through GarageBand. I even recorded the sound effects.

I am really impressed with this app. Gone are the days of the Desktop podcast rig. With a little thought you can even use the iPhone (or any smartphone) to do a phone call podcast conversation (You may need an additional mic such as the Monster iSoniTalk which will allow the guest to hear you).

Iron Man 3 for iPad

Gearing up for the third installment of the Iron Man movie series, Iron Man 3 – The Official Game by Gameloft was released. The game, a coin collecting, drone destroying, plane avoiding game follows Tony Stark as Iron Man going after the bad guys. He must collect Stark coins for upgrades and fend off the evil Crimson Dynamo and other super villains.

The game uses swipe movements – the bottom of the screen is for moving left and right – while the top will shoot down all bad guys. Avoid obstacles as you move through the streets. It will get faster as you go, too!

Iron Man 3 is free, with in-app purchases starting at $1.99

Pearltrees for iPad

Need to organize your online life? Need to do it visually? Then Pearltrees by Broceliand SAS can help. Pearltrees lets you keep everything you like at your fingertips in a is a visual and collaborative library. The interface organizes pages, photos and notes online and off.

You can set up pearls and then organize them into sub-pearls. For example, I set up a pearl for Geekazine, then set up a sub-pearl in Dorkazine, Sportazine and more.

You can explore other Pearltrees’ community members to discover amazing stuff related directly to your interests. Bring them over to your Pearltree to enhance the view. Then promote to your friends.

Aurasma

Last week I was at NAB conducting interviews. I got to check this product out called Aurasma. It is an augmented reality app which you can place in front of certain items to get bonus content. Whether it be a spiderman game or a band that starts playing – even the back of a one dollar bill that plays a movie.

Want to make your own Auras? Simple to do; just follow the on-screen instructions. You can put a business card to a face, or if you get a product (like the Geekazine logo), you can see a special seal of approval.

Aurasma is free and available on iOS devices.

TripCase for iPad

Remember when you would book a trip, and your travel agent would give you all your documents for a trip in one leather tri-fold case? FF to today…travel agents along with everyone else use QR codes and email to control our travel plans. So if you want to organize it in a digital way, TripCase is here. Put in your confirmation numbers, reservations and more into this program. You can even share with others.

However, in this mobile world, we still have an unorganized planner – most of our details are stored in a series of email addresses and text messages.

That is where TripCase by Sabre Inc. comes in. This not only allows you to plan for current trips but also allows you to put future trips into your planner even if you haven’t purchased tickets yet.

With Tripcase, you put your details in as you go – Flight plan, car info, hotel, dinner reservations, and more. You can even combine bookings from multiple sources – travel agency, hotel, more.

I have put a couple of my trips into Tripcase to keep track of things. For flight, I simply entered in my confirmation number and the info came up. I could view my seats, see which terminal or gate I am at, departure and arrival times and even the weather of the cities I am in.

The same happened with hotel reservations. I put in the confirmation number and it populated into TripCase.

With the share option, I can send my information to another person via email. I sent Jennifer my details of this upcoming trip so she knows when my plane leaves and when it arrives.

FInally, if I want to add it to my calendar, I can choose to make a snapshot of my tripcase and download it to import to a calendar. If I turn on the subscription method, I can instantly update calendars.

TripCase works with all iOS devices, Android devices and even through the web portal.

Yahoo! for iPad

I also talk about the new version of Yahoo Mail that just came out earlier in the day – utilizing the iPad screen. With it, you can organize your mail better and even work with other Yahoo! apps.

Phoster for iPad

You walk into a venue and talk to the owner. They like your band so they book you and want posters right away. No problem! With Phoster by Bucket Labs you can create a poster for that venue, attach to a wireless printer and print out copies. You can also send out the poster to Facebook, Twitter, email to the venue for additional print copies and more.

Phoster does more than just music posters. If you lost a cat or dog – if you are promoting an event – even a birthday card or other occasion. Create a poster and print it up.

Phoster has multiple ways to edit the document, take pictures from the iPad or import a picture from another area. When you are ready, send it out!

Phoster works on all iOS devices. You can even make posters that look like they fell on the bar floor and got stepped on a few times.

Google drive for iPad

I have used Google docs for a few years now – ever since it was a simple document editor to what it has become today. You can create documents, spreadsheets, presentations and more. So with Google Drive you now have the ability to get those documents on your iPad.

Google Drive is available for free and comes with 5 GB of storage (with additional storage price options). You can create or edit documents, set sharing, set for offline viewing and more. Google Drive can also be accessed on your computer, iOS or Android device

Sound Uncovered

The Exploratorium is based in San Francisco and helps you understand your senses better. They will be opening on April 17th to the public at Pier 15. To get ready, they put out an app called Sound Uncovered - which explores sound in different ways.

Ever listen to a car door shut? It can tell a lot about the car. This app will show you some differences, look at some sounds and try to deceive your ears. They even have a cool tape function that will play your recording backwards.

Sound Uncovered is free and available now. Their companion app is called color Uncovered

Paypal Dongle

The coolest thing about your business is you can start taking credit cards even if you don’t have a phone line or conventional storefront. There are a few programs out there that you can connect to your iPad, iPhone or even Android device.

I show off the Paypal app (because I use Paypal) but its also important to note that Square is also doing something similar.

Download the app and apply to accept cards. You will get a dongle in the mail to use. Best part is the connector plugs into your headphone jack so you don’t have to worry about what version iPad you have.

You can set up your Paypal app with products and bar codes for easier payments. When ready, they can give you a Paypal address connection, pay with cash or swipe the credit card.

If you forgot the credit card swipe, don’t worry. You can manually enter a card, or get an OCR of their card. Simply position the camera in front of the camera and let the app do the rest.

Paypal takes 2.7% while Square takes 2.75%.

I also take a look at the VersaStand – an iPad stand that debuted at MacWorld. VersaStand allows you to adjust in multiple positions. The back of the stand easily clips and unclips to the iPad. Its a perfect stand for your remote cash register.(www.ergofreedomline.com)

LeVamp for iPad

Imagine this: you are a vampire boy that is being chased through the back woods of France. You need to stay ahead of the lynch mob so you run your heart out. Along the way you chomp on red pigs and avoid orange ones (because they contain garlic). You chop trees to cross the stream and swipe to avoid other obstacles.

If you can imagine this, then you are playing Le Vamp by High Voltage Software. You are the boy running from the mob. The longer you run, the more points you get. Collect coins along the way to redeem for powerups.

The app is $1.99 in the app store with in-app upgrades.

Apparently, a story is out there how a child ran up £1,000 ($1,500 US) playing a game and buying the in-app purchases. I have talked in the past about how in-app purchases can cost up toward $100 a pop. Its important to sit down with people and talk about the value of money in these apps.

Today I take a look at Slotomania by Playtika LTD for iPad. This is an app that simulates the casino-style slot machines. You start with the first game – Farm Fortune. You play 9 lines to get 3 in a row or the bonus and free spin options. Once you pass the level you get another game in Bubble Rumble. Each game has it’s own challenges with more lines or higher bets.

You can do in-app purchases for more coins but you can also choose the bonuses to get more. Every few hours choose the bonus for coins or connect to Facebook get get others to join.

The iStroll is a bar that hangs from the stroller where a child can watch a video, play a game, read a book or more. They keep their minds going while you get around the neighborhood. The creator also mentions this is a good piece to have if you are in a wheelchair. Just attach the bar to the side and insert the iPad.

This is a pretty ridiculous idea. The creator wants to take 520 iPads and place them on the walls, floor and ceiling. He then wants to do some type of Facetime where the person is in a house of mirrors. He calculates the project to cost $273,000 in iPads alone. Add $20,000 for his time and the 10% Amazon gets and you have $325,000 in the next 45 days. He only has one backer.

Backing a Project – Don’t Crowdfund Raffles or Lotteries!

While I was on Indiegogo, I noticed there were two crowdfunding projects that want to giveaway an iPad mini. One in particular simply says:

I’ve always wanted to draw a large crowd by hosting a great giveaway that most people would enjoy. However, with my financial situation, I was never able to do this. Actually, I’m still not able to do this, which is why I’m doing something different. I’ll be hosting a giveaway of an iPad Mini, if we can reach our goal. Every dollar you contribute will enable you an entry. Yes, if you contribute 20 dollars, you have 20 more chances to win the iPad Mini.

Only problem: this is a blatent violations of the terms of service. Let’s take a look at that:

To engage in, or encourage, promote, facilitate or instruct others to engage in, activities which are illegal or, in our judgment and discretion, result in:

• A betting, wagering, lottery, raffle, sweepstakes, pyramid, Ponzi or similar scheme or game or contest of chance

So Indiegogo has a place to report this. I sent them an email. However, it gets more interesting…

There is another crowdfunding project to get little Daniel Vorobei a Liver Transplant. A sad situation but the “Perk” for donating is a entry into the iPad lottery ($20). $100 gets 6 entries.

So we have a baby from the Ukrane that is not in good condition. A Facebook page has been set up with the promotion to send money to this crowdfund. What is worse – this crowdfund has been going since the beginning of February.

With these two projects blatently violating TOS, I have to wonder if Indiegogo is protecting our crowdfunding…

iPad Mini Giveaway violates Indiegogo’s Terms of Service

Augmented reality is where you look at something through a mobile device and get a different response. Maybe a logo that pops out on the screen or information on what you are seeing. Blippar by blippar.com is one of those programs.

Blippar has a client list that uses the software to enhance a logo. Their packaging will have “Blipper enabled” on the side. Point your iPhone or iPad at the product and Blippar will show you whats hidden. One magazine gives you an 8-bit game to play. A couple music groups let you listen to their music. A candy bar allows you to vote for a chance to win.

Blippar is mostly for the iPhone – since you will most likely have that with you when you shop – but they did make an iPad version. Blippar is free and is also available for Android devices.

CamCard HD for iPad

Looking for a card reader for your iPad, check out CamCard HD by IntSig. You can import your business cards through the camera and run OCR to detect the name, email, website and more. You can keep the business card picture on the iPad, take a picture of the back or remove it altogether.

You can save your contacts to iPhone, Gmail or other accounts. There is even a batch scan option – when you are taking the picture, change the slider to multiple business cards. Then just snap a card then move to the next.

When you are done, check the cards for spelling and other OCR mistakes. When all is good, check it off and share it to your lists. You can even send email right away.

Best part – CamCard has a QR code option – pull up a card and choose the QR code. Then others can scan the card and get the information on their phone.

CamCard is $6.99 (they have a special going right now for $2.99).

Reflector Airplay for PC or Mac

Airplay is a great way to keep wires from crossing the room just so you can watch video on your TV rather than smartphone. But what if you just want to project that video from your smartphone to your Mac or PC?

Reflector allows you to do that. It turns on the Airplay option so you can push from one Apple device to another. It works with iPad 2 or iPhone 4S and above.

With Reflector, you can set a iPad or iPad mini border around the emulator. Set it to full screen and even set to record so you can make a how-to screencast. If you need to turn the iPad virtually you can set it to force portrait or landscape.

While you might not see the Pope blessing people from an iPad, you may start seeing other people using a bible iPad app in their everyday use.

It did make me think of what types of bible apps are out there. I read the bible when I was growing up but haven’t touched one since. So which bible iPad apps are out there?

This app has won a few awards for the usage. Along with different languages and versions (which although the app is free these options are in-app purchases) Bible+ also adds video, photos and location Atlas. So if you are reading a passage and they are talking about being in Jerusalem, you can refer to the map and get a good perspective.

Bingo Heaven for iPad

Most people think of church with bingo. Now that we’ve looked at some bible apps, let’s look at a bingo app for you to relax. Bingo Heaven is a free app that lets you play bingo and win credits. You can also win treasure chests and extra coins. There are in-app purchases starting at $1.99.

It’s a great way to take a 15 second bit and turn it into a rock concert or autotune song. Take the app and watch how others are making their videos. Then take the camera and show off your skills with this free iOS app.

During CES, Andy McCaskey turned me on to this application. Prompterous by Labotec turns your iPad into a teleprompter. With Prompterous you can type in text or bring it in from a text file up on your dropbox or Google Docs. Fix the font and spacing settings in the app – if you run a camera teleprompter system through your iPad then you can even reverse the text.

Prompterous has options to scroll through the text, slow it down, speed it up or even pause text so you can catch up. Prompterous is perfect for those reading script on camera or trying to learn a speech for school, work or that big keynote you might be giving next week.

On-Stage iPad Mount

Also I show you a cool product I saw at CES for musicians. It’s the On-Stage uMount iPad holder. The iPad case has a screw mount on the bottom which connects to an aluminum arm. You can connect the arm to a microphone stand so you can get lyrics and chords while you are playing. Turn it around and show off pictures at your shows or maybe give people lyrics to sing with.

Pinball Arcade for iPad

If you are looking for that realistic feel of pinball then Pinball Arcade by FarSight Studios might be for you. It gets as close as it can to playing the pinball games you might have grown up with. Star Trek, Bride of Pinbot and more – you can choose from 3 table views. You can even tilt the machine.

By not designating where the flipper buttons are it makes the play easier. Touch the right side and hit the right flipper.

Pinball Arcade is .99 cents and the pinball machines are in-app purchases. You can get 3-packs so you have 3 or more machines to play from.

Apple announced 128 GB iPad

You might not be excited about it, but I bet a photographer or a videographer are. For them 128 GB goes by really fast. I talk about availability and prices for this announced addition to the iPad family.

When iPad Games Shut Down

I have been playing We Rule since I got my first iPhone. I have built up my castle and it has entertained me for around 4 years. NgMoco – the game’s developer – announced that We Rule (along with some of their other titles) will be closing. They will be pulled from the App store on Feb 1, and the game will ultimately shut down on March 31st.

While I understand the reasoning, I am still sad for a game I put a lot of time into. I am happy where I ended up with We Rule and thank NgMoco for making a game.

It does come to a realization about server-side games. They will eventually shut down. It’s just a question of when.

At CES I learned that Griffin got accepted as the first 3rd party device to use the 9-pin Lightning connection on the iPad. Their product – the studio connect – allows a user to dock in and connect USB devices, microphones or instruments (through the stereo input) to their iPads and record or just jam.

The Griffin Studio Connect will be available this summer for $149.

Celluon Epic

There have been projection laser keyboards in the past at CES. However Celluon utilizes the bluetooth functionality to let you use this device on your iOS (or Android) device. All you need is a flat surface like a table-top to project the keyboard.

The size of the Epic allows you to put it in your pocket. You can also use the keyboard across the room – as long as you are in range of the Bluetooth.

Celluon Epic will be available around March for $169. The Magic Cube (another projection laser keyboard which is roughly twice the size) is available now for $149. Celluon also has solutions for the iPhone and for medical professionals. (www.celluon.com)

Behringer iStudio

Continued coverage of CES we have the Behringer iStudio – an attachment to the iPad that allows you to connect microphones, midi instruments and more. With a program like Garageband you can use the Behringer iStudio to record a music album, a podcast, mix audio for a small production and more.

The iStudio was expected to be released in Q4 for 2012 but with some complications and the introduction with a 9-pin connector, Behringer will be releasing later this year for $199 (no iPad included).

Griffin Mic Connect

While at CES I got to see some great tech for your iPad. One item came from Griffin (Griffin Mic Connect) where you can attach any microphone to your iPad for recording. The best part: the MicConnect uses the 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) jack instead of messing with a 9 pin or 30 pin connector.

The Griffin MicConnect is battery operated (AA batteries) and creates a phantom power of +48 so you can use a good condenser microphone on your rig.

I also taked with Griffin about the iPad stand in this video so you can set your iPad at a height to record.

The mic connect is $39.95 and the mount is also $39.95.
