Small gremlins continue to plague. Good thing I did a live stream on the hangout tech guy channel. Not in HD, but still a lot of great content with Gabriel Guzman and I talking Over the Top Television (OTT).

• Roku to get Overlay Ad system with Tidal TV
• A-la carte TV coming? Will you be able to get only the channels you want?
• SugarDVD now offers streaming to Roku, Boxee. No extra fees with their 1 DVD at a time service. There is a small issue, though. They are all adult DVDs
• XBox TV coming soon - With the Kinnect attached, we’re talking an interactive TV

On September 11, 2011 I took a trip with Adria Richards up to Petaluma, CA. There, on 140 Keller St, the TWiT Brick House stands. Just a few doors from the cottage, the Brick House shows that the new age of media is thriving. Inside, This Week in Tech Ep 318 was about to begin. With co-hosts Brian Brushwood, Ben Parr, Nick Bilton, Liz Gannes - Host and Chief TWiT Leo Laporte leads the crew to another successful episode of TWiT.

I got to see the new Brick House first hand. It was amazing how he put this space together. So I sat down and talked with Leo on the building of this 1.2 million dollar establishment.

All of the video production (at the cottage) was done in one room, with the setup that was well designed for one person but terrible for any more than one. I hated how they looked and just felt like this is really getting in our way. My former assistant Dane was the first person to tell me about this particular building about a year ago.

The building was vacant for two years. His business partner Lisa came over to look at it. Leo needed floor space and store front windows. See in and see out. Leo mentions that it gives excitement. A functional, transparent, organic studio that breaks the fourth wall. The look similar to the old Screen Savers show (only to remind people of it).

With a 64 square foot basement, they could add drops to put all the electronics downstairs. That way the upstairs stays cooler and quieter. As Leo put it “a raised floor that happens to be 6 foot tall.”

We talked about the look of TWiT, the 16 employees that run this shop and the shows they create. We went through how the bricks make up part of the studio (at this time, they only have 1/5 of the bricks up) and a lot more.

Steve Garfield

He is known as one of the first Video Bloggers. Living in Boston MA, Steve decided to put video into his blog in 2004. Ever since, he’s been creating content for the Web.

Jamie Davis - Pro Med Network

There are many networks out there for professionals. Did you know there is a OTT solution for doctors and nurses? That is the ProMed Network.

Jeffrey Powers caught Jamie Davis right after their session about Set top Boxes (Roku, Boxee). Jamie is excited about the ProMed Network and putting the channels on all the devices.

We talk about the 45 audio and video shows on the ProMed network. If you are a medical student or need continuing education, this is a great way to keep up.

In this episode, Jeffrey Powers talks the current news of OTT. He then gets into locations you can look into purchasing space to upload video.

The most important thing to note is never put your audio/video where you host your website. It simply cannot handle traffic if a video goes viral. Last thing you need is a website that went down due to bandwidth or visitors.

Dr Bill the Computer Curmudgeon

Episode 5 of the OTT gets us the news we are officially on iTunes. Add us (link below). We also got our first viewer mail. It’s from Dr. Bill, the computer curmudgeon. He wants to give out a tip for those using the Roku.

Did you know you can get more content than what’s in the channel store? Applications on Roku can be Public or Private. If they are private, you have to call up a special spreadsheet and get the codes so you can get them on your Roku.

These channels are mostly beta channels, but you could easily have content that doesn’t show up in the normal store. In looking at the newest content, I noticed a couple erotic channels on the Roku. Of course, you need to get subscriptions to use the channels.

OTT Episode 2

For Episode #2 of the OTT, Jeffrey Powers delves into what you will expect in this show. What Over the Top TV is, who we are going to talk to (which is pretty much anyone that is doing something in the space) and what to expect from the shows. Sometimes we will be talking to industry professionals. Other times we’ll be reviewing a product or just talking about news in the OTT space.

Make Your Own Set Top Box Using Boxee

Jeff then switches gears to talk about how you can download Boxee and install on a PC to create your own Set Top Box. The iPhone has a Boxee application that you can download, so you will be able to control your Homemade Boxee Box.

The best computer should have a HDMI or DVI port for HD pictures. A computer 2-3 years old should be able to handle the video demand, however, as codecs update, you may have to update the machine.

Jeffrey finally shows off some of the cool applications, including his Boxee app – 5 Tech Things – and the Netflix application for Boxee.

Alec Marshall

In this first episode of the OTT, Jeffrey talks with Alec Marshall from Peel.com – a phone application that lets you discover what is on terrestrial TV with the programming you want.

Alec was one of the original team members of iTunes. Alec also worked for Adobe, then on the Roku team before joining with his Apple friends and starting Peel.com. He is currently the VP of Marketing.

In this pilot episode, we talk about how the OTT is changing and landscape. We talk about and where people want to experience content. After all, OTT is about a family experience – sitting back and watching TV the way it was intended.
