Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Consumer Electronics Show (CES) preview

Every time this year I join Todd Cochrane and Andy McCaskey in Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show. We put together many hours of video for you to watch, and with the live stream again this year, we expect to have the best CES coverage we can deliver.

We are joined by Netcast Studios, GeoCaching World and the guys at Plughitz. We have 3 sponsors this year.

CES will be the year of the Ultrabook – The thin notebook using Intel’s soon to be released Ivy-bridge processor. If there is a good amount of meat on that bone, I might be picking up one of those machines.

Also, expect mobile to be very big. With Android pushing smart devices to the masses, tons of companies will be showing off interesting product.

CES is sold out in vendor booths, and the Venetian is the new Sands (which held a part of CES). We expect a lot this year, so get ready for an awesome CES!

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: GoDaddy’s Flip Flop with SOPA

If you have been hearing the news, there is a thing called Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), which seems to step all over people’s rights. While we need to combat piracy, and while SOPA does have some good points to it, the act is far from being something less than a dictatorship.

GoDaddy announced they backed SOPA, along with over 390 other companies. Since then, a lot of those companies backed down, but GoDaddy has been getting the most flack. They lost a lot of domains during a 48 hour period.

I use GoDaddy. Switching for me means a $500 price tag, and I don’t have that kind of cash to throw around like that. Besides, I think they’ve made amends, and their tools saved my rear on Saturday when I messed up.

AT&T decided to take back their $39 billion purchase deal on T-Mobile. It doesn’t mean they wont try again later – that is, if T-Mobile can stay stable.

AT&T will also have it’s hand in T-Mobile’s pot as they pay $4 billion to T-Mobile for a roaming agreement.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Turning XBox Away From Gaming

There have been reports out there that say gaming sales are down. Not to say that gaming is dead, but Microsoft does seem to have plans. A new update launched earlier today gave XBox and Update for Gesture, Voice. Now, you can play a game without a controller, or sort through your media with a comment or wave of the hand.

And it doesn’t stop there – Verizon FIOS is on-board. What would happen if your next XBox had a coaxial cable attached? CES Innovation Honoree Wi3 has a way to attach Ethernet connectors to your coax cable. Day by day, we are planning more for Internet based TV.

So there may now be a time where you want to watch a movie, but the kids want to play a game. What do you do? Buy another XBox 360? Flip a coin to see who wins?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Black Friday, Cyber Monday shows we might also #OccupySales

Well, we survived another mad dash shopping weekend. With the exception of the person that pepper sprayed for an XBox 360, and the local issues in Wisconsin with the recall efforts of our Governor. Otherwise, it’s been reported that Black Friday was a huge success. Even Apple, who hasn’t participated in the event in the past, hit 4x better sales than years past.

It makes you wonder – all these people sitting outside Wall Street for a reason? How can we say “Occupy” whatever, when we shovel into stores and buy, buy, buy? It’s like if a peasant in mid-evil times were to say “We doth have no food on thine table for thy family”, then pull out and start eating a turkey leg…

By definition, I am one of the 99%. But I don’t use that as an excuse. Yes, I get worried on bills and where my next meal will come from. I am also working on new plans to expand. That is why I started iPad365. That is why I am talking to financial experts and working new deals.

I am glad for shop owners who saw record sales. Black Friday weekend got a 24% boost and Cyber Monday also saw 20% increase in sales. But where does that leave us when it comes to saying we are poor? Or did the stores just provide the right discounts to where we could afford to buy the stuff?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Where is Spotify Going? Facebook, Maybe?

Spotify is the new music service that came over to the US a couple months ago. They have recieved a good amount of attention, so why not strike when the iron is hot. They are announcing a “New Direction” for Spotify on November 30th. What would it be? Some people like Charlie Hoover believe a variant of iTunes Match, yet they don’t have a mobile device for it.

I will go out on a limb to say that it could be an acquisition by Facebook. It would line up pretty good with the Facebook Phone: aka Buffy, which would give them advantage to 800 million users. As long as the phone is under $100, it would be a very powerful trio.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Is an iPad Price Cut in the Future?

According to Goldman Sachs, they believe the iPad will soon cut their prices. The Kindle Fire and nook color are coming out in the next couple days, at $199 and $250, there is a lot of concern these tablets will finally dig into market share of the iconic tablet.

So the real question is: Will Apple cut the price of iPad? Will they just offer a first generation iPad for a discount price?

Don’t expect the iPad to drop to $250. Maybe $399 at the most. But when the iPad3 comes out next year, it could be right back up to $499.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: What is Yahoo! Thinking

It’s more and more prevalent that Yahoo! doesn’t know what direction to go. With the lack of CEO, that (by some strange default) makes Jerry Yang the head of a company he was forced to step down from. Yahoo! has been going like “Business Usual”, trying to hide the ship that is sinking.

USA Today reports Daniel Loeb, a stockholder (5.2%) is not happy. He also claims some conflict of interests because several buyout firms are trying to get a controlling stake. If they succeed, people like Loeb could be in for a long waste of time and no chance to regain profits lost from the 2008 buyout debacle.

Yahoo! needs to take some advice: Just sell it, already!

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Microsoft and Android

It’s not unusual that a phone has some technology in it that is owned by another company. Sometimes you barter for trade – you own a patent, they own a patent and it’s a wash. However, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay a few royalties to another company.

That is the case with Microsoft patents and Android. Now, in some cases, a couple dollars here per phone goes to one patent holder, a couple dollars there goes to another. It’s not unusual in building computers. However, in the building of an Android phone, Goldman Sachs estimated Microsoft getting $444 million for Android phones next year.

Makes you wish you got in the patent game, doesn’t it?

In the end, the question arises: Does it make the phone worth it to you? Do those little additions help you build your business? For me – the answer is yes. It’s not the first time a company has profited from another, and it certainly won’t be the last.

You may not like it, but that’s not going to make it go away.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Siri – Watch What You Say, Big Apple May be Listening…

Everybody has been talking about this new voice command system of Apple called Siri. At first, the shiny luster of the new toy made them giddy. But after a while, some started to complain. This isn’t working or that isn’t working. Little did they heed the “Beta” tag that even sits on top of apple’s page for Siri.

Siri works by you asking it a question or saying something, the voice recognition deciphers your voice to words, then goes to the Apple servers to get the answer or to make a command happen. It will remind you of appointments and point you in the right direction.

New data is collected to make Siri work even better. When you ask a question, what happens to that question? Is is getting collected and stored to make Siri better, or is it getting analyzed and used for something more?

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Goodbye Steve Jobs

I know you’ve been inundated with Steve Jobs memorials, so I’ll keep mine short. I have used Apple products since the 80′s. Playing Ultima 4 on an Apple II, to creating my first videos on a Macintosh 2 computer. It was a great time to grow up, and I got to grow with Silicon Valley.

I like to think of myself as a “Computer Boomer”. I grew up around computers and got into the computer game. With that, I followed Microsoft and Apple. In 2001, I sat with a financial advisor over some 401k that I acquired at a former job. He suggested I take the penalty and put it into Apple. I decided not to touch it. Bad move, eh?

Still, Steve Jobs touched my life, like so many others. It’s only fitting that the group from Mythbusters do a tribute to Jobs. With Job’s death certificate released, reality is sinking in. Now it’s time to move on and keep his memory alive.

Live the moment, do what you love.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Apple Announcement – Post Cards, 4S, iCloud

It was a long g Apple event. The first one for Tim Cook. Although the event wasn’t fast paced, it was full of information. A new Phone, updated iPod nano and touch, new programs and even a FREE iPhone (with contract).

We now can meet up with friends we didn’t know were around, take a picture and send it as a post card, add iCloud, dictate, and talk to your new computer assistant, Siri. You can also get a new phone with “Worldwide access”. But the 4S is faster and contains the A5 processor.

We get to see a new 64 GB model as the usher in the PC-less era. All on AT&T, Verizon or Sprint. No 4G.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: CNN, Tribune get into Tablet Game

It’s inevitable Mr. Anderson. Adopting mobile is important in the media game. News organizations need to embrace this quick. There is word that Tribune subscribers soon will get a Tablet when they subscribe to their favorite paper. No details have been set yet, but expect this to be with a multi-year subscription and the Tablet to be geared to the paper of your choice.

In the meantime, it was announced that CNN bought Zite - an Application for the iPad. “Zite is thrilled about combining forces with CNN to create a world-class news discovery platform,” said Mark Johnson, CEO of Zite.

This will be the new direction of print media. The sooner your local papers start putting subscription models together, the longer your paper might stick around.

Hulu is losing control. TV stations want to be on the popular website, but don’t want viewers to watch their content? Comedy Central last year pulled their shows off Hulu for contract reasons. Now they are back – why? Because of a better contract? Not really.

Because they know Hulu is a popular service and will get more viewers.

Why does Fox want people to wait a week to watch Bones, Glee, House and more? It’s bad enough I can’t see some of those shows on my Roku. They are just encouraging DVR recordings and piracy.

Thirteen Chinese political prisioners are being held captive – some are being beaten – because of a program called “Golden Shield”. This is a system that identifies radicals in the CCP for arrest. The system was developed by Cisco after they won several contract bids to design, develop and implemet part of the project.

Because of this, most of the thirteen are serving 10 year or more sentences. Now they believe they can sue Cisco for creating Golden Shield (Read: Fighting China’s Golden Shield). That is like saying you are suing a carpenter for building your house because the Fire department didn’t get you out when it burnt to the ground.

Add to it an International lawsuit – this situation is going to get really sticky, really fast.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: S&P Downgrades – Should Tech Market be Concerned?

The S&P downgraded the stock market the other day. Whereas we lost over 600 points in 24 hours, the market is starting to come back – with a 200 point rebound today.

There is a lot of concern about whether we’re a “AAA” country. There is also question whether we hit a newer recession only a couple years after the Fanny Mae / Freddy Mac fiasco.

Sometimes you have to hit a valley before you go for a peak. Reality is, the Dow did not drop below 10,000 and is settling back in. While I’m no financial expert, I still have faith in this system.

It’s a good time to buy into a tech stock, for the prices are low…

Remember the commercial with Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) talking about Deep vein Thrombosis? Well you can get it for sitting too long. Blood clots form, then when you stand they travel up and block your heart. You could be dead in minutes.

A gamer by the name of Chris Stanifoth died after a 20 hour XBox Marathon. But the cool thing is you don’t have to be scared of doing the same thing. You just have to stand a little, sit ergonomically and do some simple stretches to keep blood flowing.

Geek Smack! Topic of the Week: Firewire Port Hacking Issue on Mac

If you own a Macbook and have OSX Snow Leopard of Lion on it, you need to be aware of the Mac Firewire Port Hacking Issue. If you leave it unattended, someone can connect up to the firewire port and grab information, including passwords. Passware, Inc, a provider of password recovery and decryption tools, announced that even if the computer is asleep, someone can pull passwords.

You need a program called the “Passwware Kit Forensic v11. It basically takes the information right from memory, then hunts for passwords.

There are ways to keep from getting zapped. Turning off computer and turn off the “Auto logon” feature. Then again, run Windows on your Mac…
