In the last couple months, we have been talking about online backup through Mozy.com. It is a great way to take your pictures and audio off-site. That way if you have a fire or theft, you do not loose your data.

It’s not the fastest thing in the world – but the more data you have, the longer the initial backup will take. Also, it is dependant on your internet connection – The initial upload took 4 days for me.

They counter it by compressing the file before uploading. It encodes, then uploads the file using 128 bit Encryption. The Data Centers are SAS70 and ISO certified. You can change how fast or slow the update can take by moving the slider during backup.

One thing I would love to see on the program would be a “Pause” button. While I can move the slider to the lowest part, the pause button would be more for those times I don’t want to have the backup start. I can then pause, do higher bandwidth tasks, then unpause. It could even unpause after 20 minutes.

Once again, don’t be discouraged about it’s possibly long upload. Once that is done, it gets a lot faster. Of course, if you have a faster connection, you might not have that problem. To have your pictures backed up, to have your audio files backed up and to have your valuable documents backed up is well worth it.

This year we had a big challenge in finding bandwidth. We had to bring our own solutions to make sure we could upload video. One of those solutions is Clear - Where you can either use a USB dongle, or just get one of the embedded device machines. Wireless in your car, on the go or just in the home – 4G WiMax is available.

It’s gotten really obvious that soon, unlimited Internet will be the thing of the past. As we get into faster speeds, it will be easier to download more and let friends connect up to download more. In the next 2 years the average persons’ internet usage will go up significantly.

This cap hurts those who work hard to keep you entertained on the Internet. While you won’t just get disconnected (well, unless your a Comcast customer), you will find the Internet will mimic your cell phone plan – overage fees to total in the hundreds or even thousands depending on what you do.

It might even affect little mom and pop shops like Geekazine. Think about it. If you ration your internet, you might find sites that have all the content you need and not specialty stuff. Even a site like Bitstrips can see some loss in users simply because they cannot be online.

Maybe someday this will re-regulate where internet usage is not important. Until then, we have to deal with this growing pain or get shut off.

Therefore, here is a little comic I wrote:

Bandwidth Caps - Bitstrips

The corporate forces opposing and supporting net neutrality have decided to fight it out in Europe, according to the New York Times. Read the article here.

The says that those ISPs who want to charge for bandwidth and to charge websites for higher priorities have concluded that, if they can establish those practices in Europe, they can more easily establish them in the United States.

The new buzzword for this assault on net neutrality is “traffic management.”

Within the second Podcast of the Madison Podcaster Group, we discuss hosting of a podcast or video cast. The biggest issue in hosting is bandwidth – since a podcast can get pretty large in size.

Within, we talk about Amazon S3, Blubrry network, PodBean, Libsyn and many more services. For Video, we have YouTube, uStream, Mogolus and blip.tv.

During the recording, a phone was a little close to the recording apparatus, in which some GSM noises came into play. While it is present at times, it does not interfere with the podcast. Chalk that one up to experience….

In Part 1, we looked at last years predictions. The numbers weren’t too shabby. This year, we’ve expanded the list to anyone that wanted to contribute. And Contributions I did get. 250 of them.

I spent most of Friday night and subsequent morning filtering the list to a couple pages worth of information. We have CEO’s, CTO’s, Marketers, Podcasters and even a Psychic helping us with this years list.

Of course at the end of the list I will be adding my 2 cents worth for 2009 on Page 2.  So without any further ado, let’s get started.

Wow. It was about a year ago I asked for people to send in thoughts as to what to expect in 2008. I also made some Technology predictions. But the real question was – How far off was I?

This is actually part 1 of a 2-part story. This first part reviews the predictions I made last year and how far off I was. Part 2 will have this years predictions, including predictions from CEO’s CTO’s TechPodcasters and even a Psychic.

So without any further ado, let’s pick apart my idiocy from last year:

OLPC will have some growing pains. The first part of OLPC will be the easiest. Maintaining the machines will be the trick. Microsoft coming onboard will muddy the water, but they might be able to do things like offer a better support network to third world countries.

Comcast increased their Bandwidth again. The Internet giant has plans in Residential and Business Service from 12 to 50 MB per second. Prices range from $42.95 to $189.95 a month.

Unfortunately, if you are a residential user, the faster speeds don’t mean a larger cap. While it doesn’t mean to download more, you can get pages a lot faster.

So now we run into the same issue again. So why not in Bitstrips format?
