1966 – The Johnniac Open Shop System (JOSS) was taken down by the RAND Corporation. It was set up to relive bottlenecks in programming batches, but more and newer work pretty much took the JOSS to the limit and ultimately became a bottleneck. Therefore, the system was taken offline indefinitely.

Bottlenecks. That is one thing companies have to deal with when putting out a faster device. The product may revolutionize in speed, but if the rest of the computer can’t handle it, you have to wait for one to catch up to the other.

Intel always works on that area. They wanted to address the connection throughout a home or business with the speed needed. Enter Light Peak technology. The hope is to eventually replace copper wiring within the house simply because it will become the bottleneck.

Todd Cochrane talks with Robert on this new technology at CES. It won’t be out until next year, but the prototype is pretty impressive. The transfer on LightPeak is 10 Gbps. In the demonstration they have 2 – 4 Gbps 1080p streams running at the same time. Therefore, the parents could be watching an action flick in the living room and the children could be watching a cartoon in 1080p and the network will not be taxed.

Wow. It was about a year ago I asked for people to send in thoughts as to what to expect in 2008. I also made some Technology predictions. But the real question was – How far off was I?

This is actually part 1 of a 2-part story. This first part reviews the predictions I made last year and how far off I was. Part 2 will have this years predictions, including predictions from CEO’s CTO’s TechPodcasters and even a Psychic.

So without any further ado, let’s pick apart my idiocy from last year:

OLPC will have some growing pains. The first part of OLPC will be the easiest. Maintaining the machines will be the trick. Microsoft coming onboard will muddy the water, but they might be able to do things like offer a better support network to third world countries.

When I go out to find a new PC – Many Years from now. Will it be equipped with a floppy drive, 2 gigs of RAM and 1 gig WiFi. Can it process a Terrabyte of data or will it be real slow. Will it be a PC, Intel or AMD, and will it be 64 bit.

Windows 7 is just around the corner. It will have something like 20 versions of it. Most important, it will have 32 bit versions as well as 64 bit versions.
