1998 – Radio Shack said in an interesting move that they partnered with Compaq over IBM in PC sales throughout their 7,000 stores. By May, the Presario 2246 would hit shelves. It is a 233 MHz AMD-K-6 that sold for $999. The Presario 4555 would cost consumers $1399 and the high end Pentium II – 300 would cost $2299.

1995 – The online auction site eBay has had a lot of success in it’s 14 year run. The company officially founded on this day by Pierre Omidyar, but it was known back then as “AuctionWeb”. The first auction was for a broken laser pointer. It was sold for $14.83.

Makes me wonder how much that laser pointer would be worth if it went back up on the auction block.

Since then the company has grown to a juggernaut in the online Auction business. They even have an ebay slot machine. Just like the auction site, I personally didn’t do too well in profiting from it…

1995 – Microsoft releases Windows 95. It was a stellar event with it’s newest operating system. The first MS OS in 32 bit mode, it also debut TCP/IP, dial up networking and Long Filename support. The event brought along many different celebrations, including places like New York, which lit up the Empire State Building with the Windows colors.

IBM wasn’t sure if they were getting Windows 95 until 15 minutes before release. Companies like HP and Compaq (at that time they were separate) were able to let consumers know that they will get upgrades, but IBM could not make that promise.

Ten years ago. What were we doing? Where were we going? I know I was working in a Call center on a popular accounting package that is now owned by Microsoft. I was living on the East Side of Madison, WI and I had just switched over from my 56k modem to a broadband connection (768 kbps, I believe) on my Pentium 75mHz machine. I also got my first Cell Phone. Let’s take a look back on where we were 10 years ago and see how that has changed….

Today in the Gym I was watching a report that Apple iPhone was challenging Blackberry for market share in the corporate world. I agreed with the report – Apple has a better user interface than the Blackberry, Blackberry is too expensive in their messaging systems and an iPhone looks a lot better than a Blackberry device.

But then I got to thinking about it. Is this really news? I mean, yeah – we’ve got one company trying for a niche that another company has. However what company hasn’t tried to emulate or compete with another company’s corner-hold before?
