Today is the Roundtable, I will be presenting WordPress 2.7, the newest version of the Blog CMS that is in Beta at this point. We are also talking with Mobicip on Child Protection and TechForward on the CompUSA and Tiger Direct Buyback program.

We had another steller week. It all started on Monday with the LIVE Show, Jerri Ellsworth Showed up and talked about her game room. It was a great show and very unexpected.

I passed by the old Comp USA store in the area yesterday. It looked so lonely. The other shops in the mall were bustling – the Party City next door was getting ready for Halloween and the Target was doing it’s normal influx of customers.

It would have been nice to see Tiger Direct purchase this outlet, alas they didn’t and therefore there is a big “For Lease” sign on it. I am intrigued as to why the sign is still up. Maybe there is still a lease on the space from CompUSA? Maybe Tiger Direct is getting some free advertising off of this? After all, it does overlook a main traffic vein of the west side.
I started remembering the rise and fall of the store. I also remember what I was able to get here. I had a CompUSA Wireless B router at one time. I also got a great deal for me and my brother on a HP CDRW drive with free MP3 player. That was years ago and the CDRW pretty much has gone in the spares bin.

The fall was kina sad. I walked into the store to see areas blocked off by torn down shelving units. They tried to sell a 486 for $100. Not sure if they sold it to anyone…

So I snapped the picture, reminisced and moved on. I suppose it’s the way we live life – things come and go. Or as the great saying goes: Things change. People Change. Hairstyles Change. Interest rates fluxuate….

Everyone puts them out; the best – and worst – of 2007, all in one article. And Geekazine is no different. However, we’re taking a slightly different approach. It’s more of a look back to see what has happened in the last year and maybe some hints for what should be done in 2008. Gets you wondering what items you lived without a year ago and what you can’t live without today. So without further ado….

Let’s start with the beginning of the year. It was good. PS3 came out in the console wars, and it was predicted that it will win out of the 3 game systems. That still has to happen. SSD was introduced at CES, and it was tech that is long overdue. The static drives can reduce heat, battery consumption and wait times loading the machine. The technology is slowly coming down to earth prices, and when it does, watch out America.

After a few years of turbulent times, CompUSA will finally be closing their remaining 103 stores. In the meantime, Apples’ Surge allows them to open a 3rd store in New York – which pushes them to 201 stores. So with all this, is it “Out with the Old, in with the Apple”?

The Computer and Electronics retail store known as CompUSA opened it’s doors to the public in 1985 (the company started in 84, but was only a wholesale distributor. It was also not called CompUSA until 1991.). By 1996 it was making it’s presence known by launching CompUSA.com. In its existence, the chain grew to over 226 stores and acquired other companies like Computer City (Tandy) and “Good Guys” stores, which were native to the West Coast.
