The media player of CES this year was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player, not the Boxee Box. Hidden in one of the back corners of the South Hall of the Consumer Electronics Show was the people at Nuu Media with their player that will retail for a bit more than the other media player boxes, but it’ll also do more than the other media player boxes.
The Nuu Player from Nuu Media does Boxee, so let’s shelve the comparisons right there. It does Boxee and has a 160 GB internal hard drive, which lets us place aside the Apple TV comparisons. On top of that, it streams media from most places that allow it, like CNN, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook video, last.fm, Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central and Flickr. The press release states it plays “all available codecs in any form – video, music, or photo – from any source and in any format”, which seems to set the bar a little high, but we’ll see upon its release. Oh, and did I mention that it plays Hulu out of the box?
The box itself is a simple shiny black box about the size of an Apple TV. The right side of the box sports a USB port, audio in and out and an SD card slot and the connections in back include a network jack, DVI, HDMI, two more USB and another that looks like Firewire 400. On the inside, it’s running Intel’s Atom processor, which isn’t as powerful as the Apple TV, but more powerful than the Boxee Box.
the player also has a WebKit based browser and Nuu Media was showing off custom Facebook and Twitter interfaces for a ten foot interface. Combined with a USB webcam and Bluetooth microphone (I assume a USB cam/microphone combo would work), it also does Skype. With Skype supporting 720p, it makes sense that Skype is moving to the home theater. I would also assume that a USB or Bluetooth keyboard would also work.
The Nuu Player will sell for “around 300? according to the folks in the booth at CES. That makes it the most expensive of all the media players on the market, but it also appears to have the most features on the market. On top of everything else listed, video search through Clicker.com and TV widgets are also included in the box.
In terms of the best media player box at CES 2010, I’d put my money on the Nuu Player from Nuu Media. It’s more than Boxee and it’s more than an Apple TV. We’ll see for certain when it’s available for sale, but based on their CES 2010 showing, the Nuu Player will sit at the top of the media player pile. Here’s a demo of the player in action:

We saw a lot of media players. But one of the more impressive ones was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player.  A full content system companion for your TV. And the best thing is it does more than the average set top box.

Online media – Web Application – Video Call

We will start with Online media. A 160 GB internal hard drive, and it can stream the same media as the others (Pandora, YouTube, CNN, Blip, MLB.tv, Flickr, Comedy Central, etc). With a USB port on the side, SD card ready and multiple audio and video jacks, Nuu Media player can accept what you throw at it. But there was one item that really sets itself apart from Boxee, Roku, Apple TV, Vudu and others.

Built in Bluetooth.

This player showed it’s difference with the attached WebKit based browser. You can use Facebook, Twitter and others with the special interface. Connect a USB webcam and USB microphone, you might be able to create content and even Skype out – Making this the perfect conference phone for any boardroom.

Todd Cochrane talks to Danny of Nuu for this most innovative TV appliance. The Nuu player will be available by Q2 for around $300. It definitely is the closest to a PC without it being a PC.

Mary Somers – a “Brand ambassador” of NBC Universal – had a New Years resolution to not eat junk food. One that she adheared to; until the Consumer Electronics Show stepped in. Jon Accarrino introduces us to Mary, in which she tells us why CES has ruined her resolution.

The NBC Universal trailer was a great place to relax, rehydrate, re-fuel, get a few articles out and get back onto the show floor. They had 2 trailers – one for the tech of NBC, and the other as a “Green Room” for staff.

We at Techpodcasts Network would like to thank our friends at NBC Universal for rolling out the “Peacock Carpet”. We truely felt like stars with them. Their hospitality will remain a real highlight in this years’ event.

Green technology was an important part of the Consumer Electronics Show. One Company is all about Green – PowerTech. Their line of protectors is pretty impressive with new innovations in surge control.

Innovations 2010

Todd Cochrane talks with Tony on these new products, including a USB drive that wirelessly controls the power of the peripherals. When you turn your computer off, the other items plugged into the powerstrip (monitor, external drive, etc) also get turned off as opposed to going into power save mode, which does draw power to stay in that mode.

The last day of the Consumer Electronics show is upon us and we were completely ready for it. Because the 9 person team was so efficient, we were able to cover most of the show in the 3 days. Today it was walking through the International side, catching a couple more interviews throughout the other halls, and of course stream the Day 2 Live Show from the NBC Universal booth.

Kara Karsten joined us on camera since not only did she review the one of two videos we created, but this item became the pick of the day. The Zeo Personal Sleep coach.

Day three of the Consumer Electronics Show and I am happy of the day. The live show from NBC Universal drew 8500 people. Thanks to all who watched the show and remember – we will be back on the stage Sunday at noon.

Andy had a small voice problem, so he did a limited amount of talking. We still went through some great products, but the product of the day was the WavIT – an iPhone remote control system. This device allows you to control any device like a remote for the iPhone. It’s not out yet – should be around in a few months. But when we used it, we created remotes, we used the presentation functions and a lot more.

Of course, remember to put the phone in Airport mode when you present the device…

The Following page is all the pictures at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) for 2010. Todd Cochrane, Andy McCaskey and myself were joined by a cast of 6. The following is the week in pictures.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is in full swing now. We will be making video from here on out. Instead of inundating you with lots of video on the front page right now, we will link to the content.

So it’s that time of year again. Planning has begun for the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show. #CES10 – as they would put it in Twitter – is the event where new tech is revealed. The first CES was held in 1967. Since then, the location and dates have changed, but the idea has not: Show off new technologies.

Todd Cochrane, Andy McCaskey and myself are going to make the trip again this year. We will record and produce interviews with vendors, discussions with industry professionals and the “Infamous Backchannel”. Last year we put together over 100 hours of content for your viewing pleasure. This year we plan to do a lot more.

I have created a video on the event. Check it out:

TSO - Twitter Search Optimization

TSO - Twitter Search Optimization

Most have heard of SEOsearch engine optimization. It seems to be a common phrase nowadays. Every now and then I even hear ads on the radio that promote SEO because it is a viable thing for anybody’s website. The better it is searched, the more traffic that can come to it.

However, there is another trend that has been creeping up. The same ideals, but this time In the microblog field. Something that could easily be known as TSO – or Twitter Search Optimization. Some practice this new ideal and others are even really good at it; but no matter what – if you are ignoring TSO, then you are ignoring a lot of new readers, listeners or viewers.

Take a look at this 140 character statement:

@geekazine #Twitter #network tool. We are a #blog #podcast and #news site. Check out the #website http://www.geekazine.com (#Geekazine)

What have I done here besides murder my 5th grade grammar? Well, I’ve simply made this into a TSO statement. Geekazine, which is mentioned twice as a Hashtag and a reply, the keywords: Twitter, Network, Blog, Podcast, News and Website. For those who are not sure, Hashtags are simply keywords that others can search on. So I could easily be scanning these 6 words to try and get response or new followers. I might then see:

RT @geekazine #Twitter #network tool. We are a #blog #podcast and #news site. Check out the #website http://www.geekazine.com (#Geekazine)

RT means that someone has re-tweeted my original post. They have then exposed their viewers – which could be 100 or 100,000,000 – to my statement. If the 1/100 rule applies (for every 100 sales pitches, you will get one sale), then I could pick up anywhere from 1 to 100,000 new followers.

Last year, when coming back from the Consumer Electronics Show, I started posting video. When I pushed over to Twitter, I used the Hashtag: #CES09. What happened in return was the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) noticed I was pushing #CES09 and re-tweeted any post that was #CES09. The end result was more followers, possible viewers to my site and listeners of my podcasts.

This tweet got me a lot of response:

You can become a Fan of something on #Facebook, but I want to become an enemy. That would be kewler.

I used only one Hashtag in Facebook, but I got several RT due to the nature of the post. Then again, if you follow #Facebook on the searches, you will see my tweet.

I have a program called Tweetdeck that lets me create special groups. Some of them are certain podcasters. Others are searches for keywords. I have a search (for example) of “Geekazine”. Just in case someone posts a tweet like ” Dude. you should listen to geekazine”; Since it’s not @geekazine or #geekazine, I may never see it. But by putting a special search on it, I will see the post.

I can find the trends on Twitter right now simply by going to search.twitter.com. There I will find out the top trends today are Pirate Day , Mayweather , Jennifer’s Body , Jay-Z , Marquez , Ahoy , Roc Raida , Texas , Google This and Bing.

If I go to Hashtags, I can find out what was said about a certain tag. I know that in the last month, the term “CES09″ has been slightly active, while only 2 people have used “CES10″.  Of course, come January, CES10 will be used a lot more.

Want to see trends of Geekazine on Twitter? Then go to a site like Trendistic. This will show you what I’ve been doing in the last month. I can check on the recent spikes, or compare Geekazine to microsoft, if I wanted to.

Last year I decided to put a method to my twitters when I posted my weekly podcast. I would do this:

#PODCAST – Ep. 104 – The day that almost made me stop podcasting http://bit.ly/JO2Ou (#Geekazine)

The first hashtag would be to search on podcasts. The second would be Geekazine’ s hashtag. I use a feature of Plurk with the parenthesis. Basically by putting the Hashtag in Parenthesis, Plurk will turn that hashtag into a link using my bit.ly/jO2Ou. While the parenthesis idea didn’t port over to Twitter, I still continue this practice. I think this is a well organized, TSO filled tweet. It tells you this post is about my Podcast on Geekazine.

Recently, a power-twit (someone who uses twitter to excess), we’ll just call @noname,  was in the local news for various legal issues. Nonetheless, their profile had 40,000 followers. @noname was tweeting several times a day and pushed items back to their website.

Of course, that person used #Followfriday for one of the marketing plans – which has gotten out of hand. The idea was to highlight a few people so they could get more followers. Some abuse the system, turn around and post all their followers every Friday. Still, there are some that use this to the best of their ability. If I use it, I do it like this:

#followfriday @caffination – #podcast about caffene and Tech, @norbtek – podcast about Cool #tech, @davewiner – post about ReverseHTTP

This gives meat and potatoes into a reason to follow this person. Not because I follow them.

Like I said, I have keyword searches I do in Twitter. They could bring up possible leads, they could bring up new listeners to my show. If I incorporate this into my website, that could bring more viewers faster than ever before.

That is why this Twitter will be called “#TSO – #Twitter #Search #Optimization and how it’s like #SEO http://bit . ly (#Geekazine).

Today’s Backchannel video from the Consumer Electronics Show was when I stopped by the AIPTEK booth. I used the AIPTEK 720P to shoot all my video. We talked with AIPTEK about their newest cameras, as well as their new mini projectors.

We look at the AHD z700 which is the newest model for only $229.

Of course, we are out here at the Consumer Electronics Show getting ready to video all the cool new stuff out here. I have added the Back Channel and Main content feeds below. If you want to see something, twitter me @geekazine, Todd @Geeknews or Andy @axmc and we’ll see if we can get there.
