You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…”
Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again.
Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could.
The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome!
Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the paper tape and turn a little dial to indicate where you are and where you are going.
A security expert testifies that electronic voting machines are insecure, not that this will surprise anyone who has geeky in-depth knowledge of computers. This story comes, though, not from a source sanctioned by or connected with a political party, but from a CIA security expert testifying before a Congressional committee. Note that, in his testimony, he stated that he was not speaking for the CIA.
This story led me to think about moving to new technology just because it’s there.
One thing that has been stressful is trying to get all the items I need to record a bunch of video at the Consumer Electronics Show. Some of the stuff I needed I had to order online. However, with some delays I’ve been waiting for these products in the mail. While I’m sure it will show up in time, it’s definitely concerning me right now.
This weeks Bitstrips we talk about the trip. Because of the trip, there may not be a Bitstrips next week.
I saw you back in Comdex in 83 – You were a exciting new technology – a marvel to me with a touchscreen.
Ohhhh, ohhh
But times have changed and you are now put to the side – the integration with the phone makes it real nice – and you get tossed in the scrap pile to die.
Ohhh, ohhh
I used your applications
ohhh, ohhh
And all your revelations….
I did have a PDA. I had a few of them. Palm, iPaq, Axim and a host of others. However, 2 years ago I got my first Smartphone. That pretty much put my last PDA to the side.
Earlier in the week I read the article “5 things the Smartphone Killed“. While I am not in total agreeance of the list just yet, I do agree on a lot of their items and I can see the Smartphone can totally engulf all the item replacements. Read the rest of this entry »
I decided to take the Podcast outside since it was a nice day. If this works, we’ll do it again next week, too.

In the movie “Man of the Year”, we saw a flawed Computer Voting System error a Comedian into the prominent role as President. In real life there can be no nationwide contract for voting machines. Each state regulates how it’s going to let voters partake in elections and whether it will comply with Federal standards.
However, more ballot space and a call for multi-language support along with disability-assisted systems are making the old systems obsolete. A true computerized version can bring on speculation of miscalculation – which is no different than voting machines of the past. We just trade gears and rubber bands with chips and disk space. So when will we start to see a 100% computerized voting system?
That’s great, it started with video tapes, movies in the home at 8, Lenny Bruce is still not afraid. I remember when we got our first VCR. It was a Betamax and we had some of the coolest movies. Of course, the Beta went the way of the do do bird. Then it was VHS. Come and almost gone.
Now it’s the DVDs turn. Earlier in the year the big question was “Who was going to replace DVD’s: HD DVD or Blu-Ray?” Now we know that answer – but does it matter? Blu-Ray players really haven’t been selling like hotcakes and if you have one, you know that it’s not the fastest thing on the planet. The ultimate irony is that Sony owned Beta and lost to VHS. Now Sony won with Blu-Ray, but will that only be a small win as alternate formats are entering into the market?

The story of Exploding laptops is not a new one. The Lithium battery in your laptop expands to the point where it breaks the encasement. Dell, Sony and IBM ended up recalling a series of batteries to prevent computer loss.
Today scientists announced they had made a solid, non-flammable polymer to replace the liquid electrolyte that is used to make the batteries. The science is new, and wont see the light of the public eye for 3 to 5 years, mainly because the polymer needs work to hold a longer charge. However, will this help the laptop not explode?
