2000 – Microsoft released the next version of the Windows Operating system in Windows 2000. Also known at Windows NT 5.0, it was the beginning of merging the NT and 9x versions. Of course, the companion was Windows ME, which didn’t do too well. The end result streamlined the two OS into Windows XP.

Google has done a lot with mapping. Google streetview gives you a good idea what to look for in a location. I have virtually walked down a street so I could be familiar with landmarks before I even get to the location. Well, what if I could have a better representation than what Google gives? What if I could have a full 3D – 360 view of a street?

navteq2Enter Navteq - a company that will take mapping to a whole new level. They have been in the mapping industry for 25 years. With a technology known as LIDAR Scanning, the mapping – like in Google Maps – will take your map from a 2D realm to a 3D level.

The Car looks like it has a weird device on top that spins at 600 revolutions per minute. It has 64 lasers collecting data at 1.5 million points. The Navteq car also has a panoramic camera and 6 other cameras that  take Hi-res photos of signs, trees and other data.

Andy McCaskey talks with Alwil about this very interesting project. Of course, the end result is a new mapping system that might just power your next Tom Tom or Garmin system. With this option, You can bring out specifics, such as if you are looking for a Starbucks, it can point that coffee shop out.

The technology is a couple years out for consumer GPS. But what a great find for us at CES!

1998 – In the 90’s, AOL and Compuserve were battling out for top dog in the ISP market. However, AOL showed a lot more game back then as Compuserve ultimately faltered when it’s main investor – H&R Block – decided to divest. The big quandary: Who was to buy Compuserve. Well, the end result was a buyout of Compuserve to AOL after Worldcom picked it up and then took what they wanted.

1993 – a Shareware copy was uploaded through a server at the University of Wisconsin (and although I was going to school there at the time, it wasn’t me – HONEST). The end result was the beginning of the first-person shooter. For those who do not want to read the Doom Bible, the story is about a Marine who assaults a senior officer, therefore was incarcerated on Mars at the Union Aerospace Corporation. His job was to overlook the teleportation device.

However, the device goes haywire and a whole bunch of creatures come out of the portal. The player is told to secure until help arrives. Unfortunately, that means heading through the establishment and defending from the monsters that attack.

You can Patent Podcasting?

It was an interesting week. The one thing that just seemed to be the strangest is that a company called VoloMedia decided to put a patent on Podcasting. While we’re all still trying to wrap our heads around it, I can see how this can happen. I remember years ago I heard of patent cases all around of people who didn’t really invent something clean up because there was no document on it.

Of course, the more famous story goes to the girl who invented that clip to store your sunglasses on your car’s visor. The story goes she used Bobby-pins to invent the clip. Someone else saw the idea and made an adjustment, then patented it for their own. The end result is that girl lost out on millions of $$

Yeah, this is not no visor clip and we are no little girls. Nonetheless, this is why you claim for intellectual property. You never know who might just come by to capitalize on it.

Podcast Recorder Up – Podcast Recorder Down.

I thought I had resolved my podcast recording problems, but when I went to do the show earlier in the week, they came back. It was frustrating, but I think I know what the issue is. I have a machine with 2 SATA drives that are striped for cache storage. They offer speed of caching my recordings. I thought one of them went bad, therefore I took it down to 1 drive. Now I think the SATA controller bus is bad. I run checks on the drives and they come out with no errors – but they still crash the machine if I use them.

Video Recording is Tough

I am not replacing that machine just yet because I may be cascading machines. The reason why? Well I also need to work on putting together a machine for Video production. The one I was using is just not going to cut it. To spend 4-5 hours on one-10 minute clip is not productive. The worst part is I got done with the video and reviewed it – only to find that the audio is not in sync with the video! ACK!

This is an interesting road to go down, but I am working on it. What would be great is if WebcamMax had an option to go above 640 x 480 on recording video. They don’t. I do have a copy of ArcSoft I got with my camera. Not too keen on using it, for it doesn’t record in a native format my video mixing program will allow. That means conversion before I can edit. Not fun.

What? The Website AGAIN!?!

This week I had more issues with the website. On Wednesday I upgraded to Wordpress 2.8.2. I thought the upgrade was fine, but when I went to post a new article on Friday, I noticed none of the AJAX was working. After a couple hours of deduction (because some functionality doesn’t work at all when AJAX is off, like disabling all plugins), I found the problem – a plug-in. What was interesting is I was planning to get rid of that plug-in anyway. This sealed the deal.

Local Community TV

If anyone is from the Madison area, you might know about WYOU, a local community TV station. They are faced with a new concern – broadcasting with out a community budget. The city gave this station $140k a year for production, but this year is the last they will get it simply because of economic times.

I was asked to come in with local music magazine CEO Rokker (Maximum Ink) to try and figure out what can be done in the social media realm to monitize, but stay commercial free. It’s an daunting and interesting task, but I think we threw some ideas their way and maybe this will work for all.

Long Weekend

It seems the next 3 weekends will be filled with trips and gigs. Therefore weekend production will be sparse. I still have to round up my notes for Week in Tech History. I should just record the month and be done with it for now. Yet I feel some sense of need to record only 7 at a time. I guess I feel then I am up on all the history.

Binghoo

The majority of the second half of the week was involved in watching the MicrosoftYahoo love connection. I personally think this is a great thing for both companies and I am curious as to what Yahoo is going to do next. Although I believe that this might be a door-hold for Microsoft to seal the deal and buy out Yahoo within 2 years. I have noted that this is something Microsoft has wanted to do for a few years now, so I think that they won’t just stop because they have search engine control of Yahoo.

If Yahoo doesn’t show a promising line by next year – Expect Microhoo to be born. It will definitely speed up the process of putting Bing on Yahoo search engines…

Shout out to Andy, Todd

Both Andy McCaskey and Todd Cochrane had family issues. I have worked with both exclusively in the last year and want to give props to both for all their work they have done in the new media space. Andy has been hit hardest as he did not run his show all week. It is a great Technical podcast that runs daily – This should be required listening to all in the tech field. I know I take the 15 minutes to listen in on all the news Andy delivers.

Well, off to a show. We’ll talk next week.

VPC and VMWare are two great programs that allow me to do a lot. Windows, Linux and in some cases, Mac (although there are still legal issues with that). VPC is great because then you can have your computer loaded up with more than one Operating system and be able to get work done.

I have installed Ubuntu on my Windows machines, but when I heard that Windows 7 will have a VPC-XP feature; I thought to myself – “Can XP be run in a Virtual environment within Ubuntu?” Then I thought even more – “Can Windows 7 run in an Ubuntu environment?”

My question got answered quickly – Even better is that it was a program that worked similar to VPC.

VirtualBox OSE is a Virtual PC program that works in the x86 environment. It is a program developed by Sun and can be installed in Windows, Mac and Linux environments. Best part is it’s a breeze to set up and use.

Therefore, I went on with my challenge: install Windows 7 on Ubuntu.

The following video shows how I did it, the difficulties (which were none) and the end result.

In 1993, Chris Clark purchased Pizza.com. He figured it would be a great domain to have. Boy was he right, but it took him 15 years to realize it.

After a couple attempts he decided to squat on the domain for a while – That is until last year. Chris decided after he heard Business.com was sold for 7 Million to try auctioning off his domain. He contracted the domain selling site Sedo.com to help out.

The end result: Chris sold the domain for $2.6 Million.

The original article on the station:WKOW – ‘Woman blames Dell for missing online classes’. Maybe an antagonizing title as it brought many Dell and Ubuntu users online to blast the TV station and the woman. And why did Ubuntu users do this? Well – this person wanted Windows instead of Ubuntu.

The story starts out where the Abbie wanted a laptop for her studies. She bought one from Dell for $1100. The machine came loaded with Ubuntu – which Abbie hadn’t heard about until that point. When she called Dell, they told her that Ubuntu is a great OS and will work well for her.

For Abbie, she is not in tune with the computer world as much as a lot of other people are. And rightfully so – I don’t normally rebuild cars, so I don’t know what parts I should use – I don’t build houses, but I (as everyone else) will rent and own houses. For Abbie, she needs a computer that will work when she turns it on, and Ubuntu wasn’t doing that.

Todd Cochrane is heading to Japan, so he’s putting up as much video he can. Therefore, I’ve been putting up all the videos. Add in the Backchannel posts and I’ve doubled the amount of articles on Geekazine for the next few weeks. Nonetheless, I am willing to sacrifice the time to get these videos up.

I also started getting back into the swing of things. Bitstrips, Quickcasts and the Podcast. Of course, there was no LIVE Show on Monday due to a very special day of mine. I ended up spending the day celebrating. Although I took the day off, it turned out I had to get some work done. Oh well – it’s all for the cause, right?

I did 2 things I never thought I would – I ate SPAM and installed Windows 7 Beta. Last week I got a laptop up and running that I didn’t expect would work. I basically bought it for parts, but when I found out there was no problems with it, I started buying parts to turn it into the second laptop.

No, I am not an advocate of Spam. I am an advocate of controlled email. If you ask for it, you should get it, but it doesn’t mean you should get your email shared for so called “3rd party” affiliates. For if they are no longer and affiliate, do they still have your email address?

Last week McColo, a webserver known for trafficking of Spam, was taken down. The result was an instant drop of unsolicited email. IronPort – An E-mail security firm, said the problematic email dropped from 153 billion messages to 64 billion: A drop of over 60%. Other sites also reported a down spike in messaging.

But is that a good thing?

When I go out to find a new PC – Many Years from now. Will it be equipped with a floppy drive, 2 gigs of RAM and 1 gig WiFi. Can it process a Terrabyte of data or will it be real slow. Will it be a PC, Intel or AMD, and will it be 64 bit.

Windows 7 is just around the corner. It will have something like 20 versions of it. Most important, it will have 32 bit versions as well as 64 bit versions.
