Android users have another advantage with the partnership that Dazzboard has. You can back up applications on your computer so you can restore them later. Also you can download directly from partners like GetJar.

Andy McCaskey talks with Taro about this great software. This is a program for IE and Firefox and will soon have support for Mac and Safari. It’s a browser extension Web based application, therefore it’s free.

pogoplug

Last year we ran into Pogoplug at the Sands and learned on how you can share your files over the internet. Andy McCaskey was literally enamored in this product. We then went and got pogoplugs – Todd Cochrane got them for all his crew.

We ran into the guys from PogoPlug this year at Show Stoppers. Andy was right on this one. We learned about the new version of the Pogo Plug. It is easy to Install – Plug in a USB drive, plug in to your router and plug into the wall. That’s it.

The Pogoplug also employs full web access. You call up the files from a browser and see files you need. There is even an iPhone app for that!

2004 – Mozilla launches the web browser that would finally give Internet Explorer a run for it’s money. The Firefox 1.0 web browser was created by Mozilla, who broke free from the Netscape Navigator browser to develop in Open Source. The Gecko layout engine browser would be available for Windows, Mac and Linux – with it being the standard browser in current flavors of Ubuntu. Last year on it’s 3.5 release, it set a new worlds record download. Firefox currently takes 1/5 of the market browser share.

Mozilla broke free and created Firefox back in 2004. Since then, they have been growing in browser popularity. Being the major browser in Linux, but also downloadable for Windows and Mac helps a lot. The ability to install Add-ons also makes this browser very flexable.

On June 17th, 2008, Mozilla released version 3.0 of the browser (with version 1.9 of the Gecko engine). They wanted to put a big dent into the Internet Explorer market, so they created a “Download party”. The idea was to get a record number of downloads for the launch – a Guiness World record, that is. They created Download Day to promote the record.

However, the day of the launch was not good to Mozilla. They got ready to push out the browser, but a website glitch caused the download to be delayed. Within a couple hours the site was back up and running, but Twitters abroad told of other locations you could go to download the software.

Could this hamper the World record efforts? Well, since there was no world record before, the answer is No.

But what Mozilla DID do is 8 million downloads in the 24 hour period. That was more traffic than Mozilla ever has seen. The Linux community did their part in getting the new browser, but it was really the “average user” that helped bring this number so high.

The Mozilla – IE battle still goes on. Also with Safari, Opera and Chrome in the picture. But did you know that AT&T also put out a Browser? Well, you will find out all these great facts and more in the Week in Tech History.

Also, we mention the 3rd step in the Summer of Geekazine contest. #Geekazine Rocks.

Commandment #1 – Thou shalt maketh thine iPhone App compatible doth 3.0 versions….

OK, it does make sense – If you make an iPhone app or if you want to keep the iPhone app in the store, you must update it for the new version of the software. For some, it may not need any real updates – just someone to test and say; “Yeah, it’s 3.0 compatible.”

It does get frustrating when you look through something like Firefox plugins and see an add-on that hasn’t been updated in a very long while. Even the plugins for this site: sometimes you have to watch what you install, or else you might just break the system.

Therefore, we submit this: These 1 Bitstrips for you all to obey… or at least get a chuckle out of.

Avast thinks Hulu is a Malicious Site

Avast thinks Hulu is a Malicious Site

I went to Hulu this afternoon to catch up on my HEROES. I didn’t get to see it on Monday, so I knew that I could go up there and watch the show without issue. Or COULD I?

Turns out Avast won’t have it. It is blocking the SWF from playing and saying “Malicious Code”. Tried a few times in Firefox and IE. Every show or movie I try to play comes up with the same thing.

Here’s the kicker – neither Avast nor the Event viewer is showing any more info. In fact, it’s not even logging the event!

Could this be a malicious code? Could it be that Avasts’ database is off? Maybe Hulu changed some stuff to thwart Boxee from going through the RSS backdoor?

Well, there is a way around that. I went to NBC.com and watched the episode. I hope it’s not a real issue on Hulu…

**Update – Avast has posted an update to allow the Hulu SWF through. There was still no Event log on what it blocked**

*Have to apologize, I think I was a little too close to the mic and some distortion occured during the show. I listened through and sounds decent so I decided to publish. Let me know if unlistenable and I’ll re-do.
