With over 80 interviews performed, we have a great start at CES. The 9 person team covered South Hall like pros. We ran into old friends, and met new ones. Great products were found and we showed them off on the Day 1 wrapup. The pick of the Day was a company called MapLock – Anti-theft for your GPS – Basically the club for your personal navigation device.

The iPhone dons olive drab, according to the Guardian:
At a conference in Arizona on Wednesday, US defence company Raytheon announced its plans to launch a new range of military-oriented programs that can turn the popular touchscreen mobile phone into a tool for use in war zones such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
The first application in its plans, called One Force Tracker, uses satellite positioning and mobile networks to give soldiers constantly updating field maps that track the position of friendly troops and enemy fighters in real time.
I was tempted to heap scorn big time, but the story goes on to discuss other ways in which Raytheon has used off-the-shelf hardware for military applications.
Just my luck.
The Guardian reports that the GPS satellite system is developing cracks in the foundation. The satellites are aging and may start to fail before they can be replaced. The full story is here.
Now, I don’t care all that much. I like maps.
I bought the GPS with credit card rewards points as a toy.
But what are all the kids who can’t read maps and can’t plot a course going to do?
An excerpt is below the fold.
Remember looking at the stars in the Radio Shack special telescope? Learning about the stars and what they make? I remember having a device that you would turn the dial to line up the date with the direction and it would tell you where the stars lay.
Todd Cochrane talks on the Techpodcasts Primary Channel with Chris from Meade. There are a lot of great technical advances with sensors, cameras and GPS that can help you look at the stars.www.meade.com

Tom Hanks probably wished he would have had this with Wilson. With ACR Electronics, the rescue beacon is a government funded project which will broadcast your location so a rescue can be performed quick.
Andy McCaskey talks with ACR on these beacons. They come with and without GPS – for GPS is not needed in all situations.

Fakes. Throughout time we’ve had to deal with those who want to pass something off as an original. Sometimes we are not fooled. Other times we go years thinking that it’s the real thing until some new technology tells us different.
In the last week I’ve seen many fake photos of different items – most notably the Large GPS picture and Windows 7 screenshots. There is even a video out there that supposedly displays Windows 7 functionality. While impressive, it makes me wonder if someone is trying to pass these off to make a quick buck?

Last years’ Consumer Electronic Show brought a bevy of new gadgets – some
really changed the way we use electronics. This year, CES is starting up and so
far it looks like we might have another winner. Like last week, I
polled the Techpodcasts panel to get their thoughts of what they expect from the
show.
“Don’t Tase me, Bro.” is being heralded as the top quote of 2007. Who would have guessed that? Well, some tried to in early 2007. Predicting the future is not just a psychics’ job. Then again, we are not predicting – we are analyzing – Seeing trends in the last year to determine what is coming out next year.
I went through some of the predictions of 2007. Some were dead on. Social Networking and Apple devices seemed to top the list in this subject. Other predictions – well, not so much.
Now we are fast approaching 2008. There is a lot of technology that was debuted in 2007 and since they are still in their infant stages, we will see them ramp into tools that change the way we compute. 2007 was also a year of rethinking. Going Green is one of the ways we rethought things. We definitely had some good progress and will continue the trend.
So what is in store for 2008? I paneled my fellow techies at http://www.techpodcasts.com/ and we came up with some items to think about for this New Year. So let’s go through the list.
