May 29th 2008 – Comcast had a different type of attack. This one opened the eyes to how our records in ICANN were being handled. The infamous “Comcast Hack” was where hackers did not attack the servers themselves, but they found a way into Network Solutions and changed the DNS of the webpage. Once the DNS is changed, the homepage would then redirect to servers of their choosing.

This last week I saw an interesting trend. Various websites I visited all of a sudden looked different. They ditched their old design and brought a new look to their WebPages. Even here at Geekazine, we are a few days away from introducing a new look. So why did everybody choose this time to change?

I remember back when the web was in its infancy, I read an interesting article where they asked the question – When is the best time to redesign your site? They suggested that if you redesign it too much too quickly, people will start to get turned off and decide to travel elsewhere on the information superhighway.

However, sometimes a redesign is what’s needed to bring more traffic. Moving items in a “More ergonomical” fashion might give a site a better ease of use, therefore people will choose your site over the competitors. And of course, more viewers may mean more money – in theory at least.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has voted to change a process that turned “Domain tasting” into a real big issue for many domain customers. The group agreed that it should change how the 5 day grace period on registering a domain name works. The grace period was to give people a chance to remit if they made a mistake on purchasing a domain name. It was also a chance to give a business time to do some market research on the name. But will this be the answer, or will this cause more headaches for legitimate domain purchasers?

Domain tasting is a term cooked up to define the grace period of a domain purchase. Let’s say a customer wants to register “thisismydomain.com”. They purchase the name, in which they have 5 days to turn around and say “I made a mistake and don’t want this one”. The idea was for people who misspell the name (in this case, we’ll say the customer registered “thisismydoman.com”) or decide to take their business in another direction a chance to back out of the transaction.
