Well the big news from Google today was Google Buzz. Not to be confused with Yahoo Buzz – which might cause some  friction because they are both social networks. Some even say it’s trying to be Facebook.

Google Buzz is GMail in real time. You can add to email in real time. Kinda like Wave does, except it can be on a personal level. It has some Twitter functionality – @geekazine will be recognized. You can even speak in your comments and they will be transcribed.

Buzz will also be available for the mobile phone. A little Augemented 2D action – Hit the Nearby option on Google Maps in the phone and find out what others are saying. Geotagged Buzz posts will show you what is being said. Another movie premier killer option right there.

buzz

Here is where you can see a commercial about Google Buzz. It won’t be available for everyone just yet, But you know you have it when you look under your “Inbox” and it says “Buzz”. Technically it’s in Beta, although they don’t seem to be calling it a Beta.

The iPhone app is simply a link to the page you can place on your Home screen. I instantly saw my Buzz and a comment from someone only a few miles away from me. Moved the Map over to CA and there was a lot of Buzz.

It will be interesting how this application will cultivate. Will it be a Facebook Killa? Will it change the way we use E-Mail? Will the “G” in GMail become GeoTag Mail? Will Yahoo sue Google for “Buzz”? Only time will tell. What do you think of this new innovation from Google?

tiffen

I always said “If someone would make a good mount for iPhone, they could change the way people take video.” Well, Tiffen has done it with the Tiffen Steadicam Smoothie.

Tiffen has made several Steadicam products for years. This model is made specifically for iPhone, Droid and Flip cameras. Todd Cochrane talks with Chrissie on this great innovation. There is no release date or price just yet, but as Chrissie said – Just watch the website.

But I want one now….

1986 – Back in that day, Comdex was the big computer show. There were two versions: one that was held in Chicago in the spring and the other in Las Vegas mid-November. At this time, Atari was the big dog on the block. Jack Tramiel was putting all efforts in this years Comdex after seeing a small dip in the shares.

So they set up a 65 booth display with different 3rd party developers that would show off what the Atari could do. The big innovation that year – the SX212 1200 baud modem for $99.95. They also showed off the Atari 2600jr and the Atari 7800, and because of that impressive show, Atari boasted a $25 million profit that year.

Of course, the company went well for a few more years, merged with JTS, which was then bought by Hasbro in 1998. The company still is survived in a way to this day, but not in the glory that it was back then.

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…”

Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again.

Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could.

The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome!

Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the paper tape and turn a little dial to indicate where you are and where you are going.transformers-watch

Bloomberg quotes Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft’s efforts to become a player in internet searches. Read the full story here:

Google does have to be all things to all people,” Ballmer said yesterday in an interview in New York. “Our search does not need to be all things to all people.”

Google may be tentative about changing the look of its search pages, causing the company to take fewer risks, said Ballmer, 52. The challenge is similar to what Microsoft faces with its Windows operating system, which needs to appeal to a broad range of customers, he said.

I find Mr. Ballmer’s position interesting for a number of reasons.

When it comes to some great innovation in navigation systems, Eclipse seems to impress. Andy stops and talks with Michael Wess at CES Unveiled to check in on the AVN4430 multi-function Auto Navigation system. Not only is it a detachable TomTom GPS unit, but it also plays from DVDs or an iPod on the car unit. You can even connect another device via USB. A great All-in-one item.

*Correction – The 4430 is the model in the demonstration. The 726E (7″ screen) will be coming out soon)
