Dipping back in the mailbag - This week, we learned a little more about OnLive Desktop. This is a service that loads up a virtual windows box for you. Complete with Office 2010, and a couple other Windows programs.
OnLive Desktop is a service you sign up for. There is a free service, with 2 GB to use, then plans starting at $4.99 a month. Best part about this – you can use this on iPad or Android.
You can sign in on your computer to upload files to be used. For instance, I could upload power point presentations, then use the iPad to present. All you need is an internet connection.
You might wonder how OnLive can do this. There was a licensing issue with Windows 7, so to keep in compliance, it has switched to Windows Server 2008 R2. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but add a Bluetooth keyboard, and you could really get some Word documents written.
Goto www.onlive.com to find out more.

iTwin is a program that will connect two computers up, no matter where you are. As long as you have an internet connection, you can connect to the other computer and get files.
iTwin breaks into two pieces, plug the first USB drive into one computer, the other you take with you. When you need to connect, just plug the other USB in, run the configuration, and get your files. Mac or PC, iTwin will connect to both.
iTwin is available for $100.

Moneual makes PC cases – Home Theater PC cases to be exact. However, they were at CES with a new product. A Robotic air purifier that can move room – to – room.
They actually had 6 items that all won innovation awards this year at CES. The air purifier – called Rydis H1004 Silvercare – can move room to room to purify. It will enter the room and work until pure, then move to another room.
It is also a monitoring system for the elderly. The tablet on top and internet connection could also allow you to Skype someone while it’s purifying the air. A true multifunction device.
So it’s like a robotic pet that can purify the air.

How to Configure the Mozy Backup

In the last couple months, we have been talking about online backup through Mozy.com. It is a great way to take your pictures and audio off-site. That way if you have a fire or theft, you do not loose your data.
It’s not the fastest thing in the world – but the more data you have, the longer the initial backup will take. Also, it is dependant on your internet connection – The initial upload took 4 days for me.
They counter it by compressing the file before uploading. It encodes, then uploads the file using 128 bit Encryption. The Data Centers are SAS70 and ISO certified. You can change how fast or slow the update can take by moving the slider during backup.
One thing I would love to see on the program would be a “Pause” button. While I can move the slider to the lowest part, the pause button would be more for those times I don’t want to have the backup start. I can then pause, do higher bandwidth tasks, then unpause. It could even unpause after 20 minutes.
Once again, don’t be discouraged about it’s possibly long upload. Once that is done, it gets a lot faster. Of course, if you have a faster connection, you might not have that problem. To have your pictures backed up, to have your audio files backed up and to have your valuable documents backed up is well worth it.
Ramblings – 1-17-09 – Catch Up From Trip

It’s interesting how much work I not only had to catch up on, but also the work I created. The CES trip was fabulous – it took me to a place I have never been before. In all reality, I have never wanted to go to Las Vegas. The sounds of a casino can get annoying after a while for me. Yet, it really wasn’t as bad as I thought.
We stayed at the Monte Carlo – which I have to say I was not impressed with at all. Todd is campaigning the fact that the $14 – a – night internet connection was not great. While I agree with him, I had some other issues that really make me want to not stay there.
I actually changed rooms during the stay. The construction of their Civic Center was annoying (which I know is not their fault, but really – who drops steel beams at 5 AM on a Saturday or Sunday morning? That could have been done during the week). The reason why I moved rooms was initially because of two things – 1. They said the internet would be faster in another room (yeah, right) and when the other rooms took a shower, I would hear loud rattling by the pipes. The move to the next room subsided the pipe rattling, but you could hear the water draining no matter what room you were in.
