What are DECT phones? In a nutshell, it’s a  cordless phone. DECT phones are perfect for a wide wireless range around the home - The range of the handset will depend on the phone itself, but we are talking 400 ft at least. You can also use DECT phones like walkie-talkies.

The folks at Motorola show us the HS1001 – a cordless that is also a web browser. That way you don’t have to pull out your laptop and find out who is starring in your new favorite movie.  Andy McCaskey talks with Motorola to find out more about DECT and the HS1001.

I think I did my first informercial….

A few months ago I heard about this product. Andy McCaskey talked about it on a holiday wish-list. Well little did he know that we were going to get not only a first hand look at this stuff that looks like Silly- Putty, but also do an interview for the product.

The product is called Cyber Clean. It’s a innovative way to clean the crud off the computer keyboard, mouse and even ports on a laptop like a USB port. The gelatinous substance gets in the cracks and crevices and takes the dirt, dust, hair and other particles off your devices. It can be used many times, but it will tell you when it’s time to change when the color goes from a bright neon to a dark green.

Jeffrey Powers talks with Allen about this interesting product. Kara Karsten volunteers her Macbook to be the guinea pig for the video. They come in two flavors – Home / Office and Automotive. Allen also mentions Cyber Clean is great for getting pet hair out of corners or even duct vents.

cyberlink

Are you ready to get 3-D on your Laptop? Well Cyberlink is working on it. Not only will it be in 3-D, but also Blu-Ray Disc. All in their PowerDVD program.

Andy McCaskey talks with Tom about 3-D Blu-Ray. Tom shows a pre-release version of the new drives. The best part is you can get 3-D in the shutter technology and the color displacement technology (red – blue glasses). It will be available on many newer laptops and desktops to get Blu-Ray – especially with 3-D video.

I love my 2 monitor setup at home. It would be nice to have that on the laptop. While there are solutions out there, nothing has really presented a good answer until now. That is where MyCINQ comes in.

MyCINQ is a 10.1 inch USB monitor that can be set on your desk, or mounted to your laptop. You can then use it to watch Twitter, keep up on stocks, run a movie or Hulu program and a lot more. Want another monitor? You can run up to 6 MyCINQ monitors.

Jeffrey Powers caught up with Ben just before CES started to take a look at this new startup. The Monitor will be available in Q3 of 2010. There is works in getting it in HD. With a $249 price tag, these monitors can really add to a presentation, or just get more work done.

Need extra monitors? My Desktop can connect up to 6 itself – but it requires a special card. My Laptop only can do 2 monitors – 1 being VGA.

displaylink

However, Display Link has the answer – You can connect up to 6 external USB monitors. Display Link also has teamed up with HP to create universal docking stations (USB connected).

Todd Cochrane talks to Dennis about these great products. For $99 you can get the power of multiple monitors.

2004 – It was an interesting day in the Tech community when we heard the news. IBM was getting out of the desktop and laptop markets and focus on server and infrastructure. They started by selling all their assets to Lenovo – China’s largest computer manufacturer. Lenovo wasn’t a household name in the US, but this pretty much changed that overnight.

The deal was for $650 in cash and $600 million in stock. Lenovo would also acquire $500 million in IBM liabilities, which would put the total to $1.75 Billion. In return, Lenovo would instantly become the 3rd largest PC vendor with $12 Billion in revenue, not to mention major markets in both China and the U.S.

Reuters has a slide show on the evolution of the laptop. It’s fascinating.

Start here.

I remember the first laptops I used. I was on a campaign to convince my boss to buy me a laptop because I was traveling frequently and wanted to be able to call my local BBS’s from the road.

The IS department had a couple of laptops to lend out for business travel. They had DOS 3.1 or 5.0, modems, DisplayWrite3, and a few other programs on them.

A long time ago, while helping someone set up a component stereo system (remember them?), I remarked that modern life is living with wires.

And it still comes down to wires, whether they are made of metal or silicone.

Wednesday, I was wireless. In fact, my whole street was. A garbage truck tore down the main lines feeding the street, as well as one of the poles they were attached to. It took out the electricity, the landline, and the cable, and it emphasized how wound up with wires our lives have become.

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…”

Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again.

Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could.

The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome!

Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the paper tape and turn a little dial to indicate where you are and where you are going.transformers-watch

My Dell Inspiron 6000 died this yesterday morning.

I woke up just in time to watch the display fade to black. Everything else works; I hooked it up to a monitor and am using it right now, but its days a portable are over.

I have been a rabid Opera fanboy since Opera v. 3.

I now have gotten Opera on the netbook that I discussed here. Here’s how I did it (hint: it worked the same as if I were on regular laptop or desktop):
