At Scientific Blogging, Kimberley Tyree, who field-tested Mars Rovers for NASA, describes what it’s like to drive one. Read it here.
Making driving Spirit more difficult than the average rover is the fact that commands take up to twenty minutes to reach her, and as long again for the results of a drive command to be returned to Earth. (Can you imagine trying to free your 4-wheel drive on Earth with that restriction?!) Plus, due to satellite limitations, Spirit’s drivers can only communicate with her twice a day. While Spirit can be told to drive to a certain location, such as a given bearing and distance away, due to wheel slippage, obstacles or other factors, the rover may end up in a slightly different location than expected. If multi-step navigational commands are sent at one time, and the first step is off, the final result may be quite different than desired.

Wow. It was about a year ago I asked for people to send in thoughts as to what to expect in 2008. I also made some Technology predictions. But the real question was – How far off was I?
This is actually part 1 of a 2-part story. This first part reviews the predictions I made last year and how far off I was. Part 2 will have this years predictions, including predictions from CEO’s CTO’s TechPodcasters and even a Psychic.
So without any further ado, let’s pick apart my idiocy from last year:
OLPC will have some growing pains. The first part of OLPC will be the easiest. Maintaining the machines will be the trick. Microsoft coming onboard will muddy the water, but they might be able to do things like offer a better support network to third world countries.
I decided to take the Podcast outside since it was a nice day. If this works, we’ll do it again next week, too.

Remember when you looked at the moon and your parents said “Yep, that’s made of cheese”. Well, maybe it’s a Wisconsin thing – I’m not sure. However I remember hearing stuff like that as a kid and wonder what the moon actually had on it that could help us.
It’s cool to be able to do the same thing for Mars. With the Phoenix making the “Perfect touchdown”, we might just get a glimpse of a planet so close, yet so far away. And maybe even answer the big question – is there really Amazon Women on Mars and when will they attack?

Change. Some love to do it, others would like to stay where they are. Sometimes change is needed – newer, faster, more powerful to take over old and un-updatable. Still, within time change happens like it always does in life. Its really a question of whether you want to change with it, or stick with the same.
