geekazinemobileYou might have seen this picture on different websites. It’s a barcode. Just like with a magazine, this barcode is a unique identifier to the world. While it looks pretty, it’s function is simple: Get you to Geekazine.com

Now if your already on Geekazine.com, why would you worry about this? Well this isn’t as much for your computer, as it is for your mobile phone. Let’s say you are on your Notebook and would like to get the site on your mobile phone. Instead of typing in the URL, just point the camera to this symbol and let it do the work. The best part is each page will have it’s own symbol. If you are looking at the Day in Tech History content, for example, then your mobile phone will go directly to the page in question.

To use this interesting feature, all you have to do is download a program that will read the bar code. Here are a few programs you can look into:

  1. Active Print
  2. BeeTagg
  3. Google
  4. i-nigma
  5. Kaywa
  6. Nokia
  7. QuickMark
  8. UpCode

I am hoping this will help enhance your experience to Geekazine. If there is anything you want me to add on the site, just let me know in a comment below. Of course, you can always call 608-205-4378 or email geekazine@gmail.com for more information.

Thanks for reading!

Do you buy music from iTunes, Amazon or other areas? Having a problem organizing those purchases? Well you might want to check out Dazzboard – it manages your online media.

Android users have another advantage with the partnership that Dazzboard has. You can back up applications on your computer so you can restore them later. Also you can download directly from partners like GetJar.

Andy McCaskey talks with Taro about this great software. This is a program for IE and Firefox and will soon have support for Mac and Safari. It’s a browser extension Web based application, therefore it’s free.

As the market for smartphones heats up, so too are the phone patent wars. I suspect that, in the long run, the only outfits that really benefit from this will be the law firms, but it should be fun to watch.

Nokia and Apple are busy suing each other. Nokia sued Apple in October and then in December filed a complaint against Apple with the United States International Trade Commission. Now Apple has returned the favor:

Apple filed the new ITC complaint on Friday. Nokia is taking the usual “wait-and-see” attitude.

They have been negotiating for a couple of years over licenses based on Nokia’s claim that Apple has appropriated Nokia technology for the iPhone. Now it looks as if negotiations are either breaking down or being taken to a higher level. First, Nokia sued Apple. Now Apple is suing Nokia.

    The Guardian reports:

In October, Nokia – which makes almost four out of every 10 mobile phones sold worldwide – sued Apple in the US courts, alleging that its popular iPhone infringes 10 of its patents. The case is unlikely to come to court until the end of 2011.

      (snip)

The patents which Apple alleges Nokia has infringed include one relating to the ability to plug a mobile phone into a computer with a USB cable, one that relates to teleconferencing applications, one connected with the iPhone’s energy saving features and several relating to the technical workings of mobile phone software.

I predict a sealed settlement for undisclosed sums.

In other news, it’s cold and snowy in Connecticut, where an errand has taken me this weekend. But nothing like as snowy as Wisconsin.

Last week in this place. I ate a lot of Brats this last weekend. Goodbye to friend ‘Supergirl’. Show Prep on Google Docs. Still need an iPhone App developer.

OK. So we don’t see 200+ lb women gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. We don’t see a Yugo on the cover of Hot Rod. How many would take Matthew Mcconaughey over Jack Black (I wouldn’t take either, but you know what I’m talking about)?

We live in a world where sometimes form overtakes function. So when it comes to personal tech gadgets, we might just view it the same way. It doesn’t matter if the ugly device will do more for you than the sleek looking one. We purchase items on impulse. So do we accept because of looks even if the functionality is not there?

Today I was perusing the news and so far everything I have seen and heard is over the iPhone 2.0. Within the next few hours we are going to be sitting at the edge of our seats listening to Steve Jobs give a keynote at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CA. What will he talk about? Will it be the iPhone? Will we all be wowed or disappointed?

The truth is…. I don’t care. Yes, this is a great phone with a lot of innovation and ingenuity. Yes, it can do a plethora of things that my current phone might or might not do. But what is the big turn-on with this device? It’s not a magic genie that will grant you 3 wishes.

There are 5 million iPhones out there right now. That is not even 1% of the cell phone population. At $400 a pop, I suppose that’s a good reason why it’s not there.

10 years ago I walked into the local dealer and picked up my first cell phone. I believe it was a Nokia 920. My work cell was a Motorola Clam Shell, then I believe a Nokia 720. I then got a 5100 series, followed by a 6300 series. 2 years ago I purchased the Razr3, and now I have an HTC 8125.

5 cell phones in 10 years. Throughout those times I have called, texted, surfed and played the occasional game of Bubble breaker. My phone has been by my side all this time. So has my wallet and keys. But which one would I want the most if I had to choose one?

IDC and Nortel Networks did a study to find out what is more important – your cell phone or your wallet. 38 percent of over 2000 people polled wanted their cell phone. 30 percent went for the wallet, while the remainder went for something else.

Ten years ago. What were we doing? Where were we going? I know I was working in a Call center on a popular accounting package that is now owned by Microsoft. I was living on the East Side of Madison, WI and I had just switched over from my 56k modem to a broadband connection (768 kbps, I believe) on my Pentium 75mHz machine. I also got my first Cell Phone. Let’s take a look back on where we were 10 years ago and see how that has changed….

Today in the Gym I was watching a report that Apple iPhone was challenging Blackberry for market share in the corporate world. I agreed with the report – Apple has a better user interface than the Blackberry, Blackberry is too expensive in their messaging systems and an iPhone looks a lot better than a Blackberry device.

But then I got to thinking about it. Is this really news? I mean, yeah – we’ve got one company trying for a niche that another company has. However what company hasn’t tried to emulate or compete with another company’s corner-hold before?
