Almost Didn’t do the show tonight because of another issue that put me in a very bad place. 8-12 inches snow coming down here in the Midwest. Looking for a better Webcam Producer – Webcammax doesn’t get it. We are giving away another copy of Diskeeper 2010. We also go through a correction on information from the 5 Tech Things.

**UPDATE 2** Geekazine has no affiliation with Rhapsody. Certain comments have been coming in to cancel Rhapsody accounts, which I have no power to do. You can continue to leave the comments to cancel the online service, but they will go unanswered. Thank you.
**Update – I called the number today to cancel the account. It was an automated voice that then said “To cancel, press 1″. That THEN directed me to a prompt that said: “We now cancel accounts online. To do that, go to http://www.rhapsody.com/cancel”. They couldn’t keep that prompt on during the evening? How about changing the website? **
I went to close an account for a service I don’t use anymore. After hunting for the “Cancellation” option, the site said I have to call a non-800 number to cancel. But what was really disappointing is that upon calling, the message said I had to wait until normal business hours to cancel.
Wow. Do we really live in 1998 again? Why isn’t there a “Cancel my subscription” button on the site. Most services will send email confirmation after you hit that button, then process the cancellation.
This is bad form. You are playing with my trust in your company – and now I don’t trust you. Forget me ever coming back. The iPhone application is gone. And if anyone ever talks about your service, I am so not going to recommend it.
See, the reason why I am so livid, is because this service is doing it deliberately. The service itself is not a financial institution – So I should have some ease of use to close my account.
With this tactic, they are hoping I forget about canceling for another month. Next thing you know, it’s 3 months later and they’ve taken $45. Don’t ask for a refund – They’re terms of service specifically state none shall be given.
Shame on you for making it harder for me to cancel the service. Right now you remain anonymous, but if my cancellation experience is a bad one, you’re anonymity will be retracted.
This is the newest segment in the Geekazine Quickcast called “App Wild”. It’s name says it all – We talk about applications that you can get for your iPhone, Andoid, Palm Pre, Blackberry or whatever device you use.

Comcast has been riddled in the news lately. Bandwidth caps, overage fees all for simply surfing the internet. However they simultaneously opened Fancast – a Video Download site which won’t go against that cap. They also have Comcast.net, Disney Connection and Rhapsody Player Plus – All within their community.
There was another company that tried to keep their members contained within their virtual fence. That company was AOL. However, AOL has been opening up for all to use. Still, I have to ask the question: Is Comcast becoming the next AOL?

Welcome to the Cloud. At least, my version. Cloud Computing is getting more and more press lately, so I thought this week’s Bitstrips should talk about this new idea.
One thing you have to remember is in some ways you might already be on version of Cloud Computing. I know I am. I have a Rhapsody account – I get my music from a source for $18.99 a month. Music is not on my computer – it’s on a server somewhere and it pushes to my machine or MP3 player.
This Bitstrips strip is not on my computer or my server. It’s on Bitstrips server. I create it on a program that’s not on my computer. I rely on the internet to make and show it.
It would be interesting to see how much bandwidth I go through a month. Uploading shows, ustream channel, downloading software updates and media content. All of it legally.
There are some that decide to use their internet connection without abandon. They download movies, music and computer programs without legally paying for it. I have seen many downloading 4 to 5 items at a time, which at gigabytes at a pop, it’s a lot of data that passes through. And with programs like bittorrent, not only does it download the items, but it turns your computer into a “Seed” in which others can use to pull from.
Comcast is working on a model to cap bandwidth per month. For some it won’t be noticeable. For the internet Zealot, they might find it tougher to work and or play. Do we need bandwidth limits to control our data consumption, or are internet companies treading in areas they shouldn’t?

The other day I was talking with EpicOnline on my live stream at http://live.geekazine.com and we started talking about Twitter and what would happen if the company folded tomorrow. Not that it would happen, but we’ve already seen some sites dissapear. Stage 6, Think Secret, Apple Blog. Even Yahoo has closed services and shuttled over to another.
The Blogger I was trying to remember was Marc Orchant who passed away in December 2007

I remember when I got my first MP3. It was 1999, and I was pulling it from a P2P site that doesn’t exist anymore. That, well, and the entire collection of photo shopped Brittany Spears pictures. Back then, rights were being trampled and we did it because we didn’t know better.
Nowadays, we have people right and left telling us that downloading music is not legal. Some people have turned to legal methods of music acquisition – 99 cents per song, or through a subscription service like Napster or Rhapsody. Others decided to take their chances and continue downloading and trading music. And because of this, companies have begun the attempt to curb the illegal download of such music. But as they did that, both artists and consumers rights were getting trampled, which lead us to ask the question: Does DRM actually work?
I really like WordPress. AJAX Rocks! Pictures to come. Lots of news on a Snowy Week. I have to shovel again when this show is done….
