The media player of CES this year was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player, not the Boxee Box. Hidden in one of the back corners of the South Hall of the Consumer Electronics Show was the people at Nuu Media with their player that will retail for a bit more than the other media player boxes, but it’ll also do more than the other media player boxes.
The Nuu Player from Nuu Media does Boxee, so let’s shelve the comparisons right there. It does Boxee and has a 160 GB internal hard drive, which lets us place aside the Apple TV comparisons. On top of that, it streams media from most places that allow it, like CNN, Pandora, YouTube, Facebook video, last.fm, Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central and Flickr. The press release states it plays “all available codecs in any form – video, music, or photo – from any source and in any format”, which seems to set the bar a little high, but we’ll see upon its release. Oh, and did I mention that it plays Hulu out of the box?
The box itself is a simple shiny black box about the size of an Apple TV. The right side of the box sports a USB port, audio in and out and an SD card slot and the connections in back include a network jack, DVI, HDMI, two more USB and another that looks like Firewire 400. On the inside, it’s running Intel’s Atom processor, which isn’t as powerful as the Apple TV, but more powerful than the Boxee Box.
the player also has a WebKit based browser and Nuu Media was showing off custom Facebook and Twitter interfaces for a ten foot interface. Combined with a USB webcam and Bluetooth microphone (I assume a USB cam/microphone combo would work), it also does Skype. With Skype supporting 720p, it makes sense that Skype is moving to the home theater. I would also assume that a USB or Bluetooth keyboard would also work.
The Nuu Player will sell for “around 300? according to the folks in the booth at CES. That makes it the most expensive of all the media players on the market, but it also appears to have the most features on the market. On top of everything else listed, video search through Clicker.com and TV widgets are also included in the box.
In terms of the best media player box at CES 2010, I’d put my money on the Nuu Player from Nuu Media. It’s more than Boxee and it’s more than an Apple TV. We’ll see for certain when it’s available for sale, but based on their CES 2010 showing, the Nuu Player will sit at the top of the media player pile. Here’s a demo of the player in action:

We saw a lot of media players. But one of the more impressive ones was Nuu Media’s Nuu Player.  A full content system companion for your TV. And the best thing is it does more than the average set top box.

Online media – Web Application – Video Call

We will start with Online media. A 160 GB internal hard drive, and it can stream the same media as the others (Pandora, YouTube, CNN, Blip, MLB.tv, Flickr, Comedy Central, etc). With a USB port on the side, SD card ready and multiple audio and video jacks, Nuu Media player can accept what you throw at it. But there was one item that really sets itself apart from Boxee, Roku, Apple TV, Vudu and others.

Built in Bluetooth.

This player showed it’s difference with the attached WebKit based browser. You can use Facebook, Twitter and others with the special interface. Connect a USB webcam and USB microphone, you might be able to create content and even Skype out – Making this the perfect conference phone for any boardroom.

Todd Cochrane talks to Danny of Nuu for this most innovative TV appliance. The Nuu player will be available by Q2 for around $300. It definitely is the closest to a PC without it being a PC.

I have not concealed my skepticism about “cloud computing.” I see only two reason for sticking my data out there somewhere in the care of who knows who, except for off-site backups and collaborative projects. (For anyone who has invested deeply in time or money or both, in websites, software, and data, offsite backups are a good thing.)

“Because it’s there” is an insufficient reason for using any technology.

According to Bloomberg, EBay’s has found a buyer for Skype–an investment outfit that includes Marc Andreessen, father of Netscape.

It was a marriage that never worked out. Skype has continued to grow, but Ebay was never able to do what they wanted with it. I think that it is probably a good move for both companies:

Skype’s revenue grew 25 percent to $170 million in the second quarter, EBay reported in July. The service added 37.3 million users in the three-month period, for a total of 480.5 million.

Even as the business grew, EBay never made good on its original promise for Skype: integrating the service into its e- commerce site, so buyers and sellers could use it to discuss large purchases. EBay wrote down Skype’s value to $1.2 billion in 2006.

(I know at least one person who is resisting requests from family members, who live on another continent and are on very good terms, to get Skype because of a fear of having no time left to be alone.)

Me, I use free and open source Ekiga when I need internet telephony.

You might remember the products. You might remember the hype. Then, you are tooling down highway 41 years later and all of a sudden you think to yourself – “Hey, whatever happened to…”

Failed ideas. Maybe it was a great idea, but wasn’t made right, or design errors brought it down. Maybe it was just a bad product. Well, let’s take a stroll down memory lane and see if we cannot repeat these errors again.

Oh yeah, why 16? Well because we could.

The Computer Watch: Whether it was the Ruputer, the MSN Direct ‘Smart’ Watches, the Timex Data Link Watch or another gadget watch – BTW – I remember having a “Transformers watch”. It was awesome!

Still, the Dick Tracey style communication watches, the “Computer on a wrist”, never really hit it off. I even remember a watch that gave you directions. You would put in the paper tape and turn a little dial to indicate where you are and where you are going.transformers-watch

According to Bloomberg and several other sources, EBay is planning to spin off Skype with an IPO. Read the story here.

Apparently, Skype has never quite fit in with EBay. Here’s an excerpt:

“The only problem with Skype is it’s part of EBay,” said Jeff Lindsay, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York. “It’s a marriage made in hell. They will make more money from spinning it out than they ever could by keeping it.”

USB Video is not a new technology. But it has gotten better than what it used to be. Companies like DisplayLink have really started to change my mind on how. Then again, when you start talking about DVI – or Digital Visual Interface technology. You can even use your Netbook to connect to the bigger screens.

Andy McCaskey of the Tech Podcast Network Team talks with DisplayLink about the new products including Mimo – a small display you can use for smaller windows like Skype. They have some great insight on this. In fact, you may already have some of their technologies.
