Social Media Breakfast Madison 4-20-11: Jacob Harlow, Century House

Podcast: EmbedSubscribe: iTunes | RSSIn the first half of the Social Media House – Madison, Jacob Harlow from Century House talks about how his business uses social media. He talks about making the experience personal and not being a “bot” on your Twitter or Facebook. Don’t worry about getting lots of followers, just the ones that give or bring you business. During the video, you will see shots of the Century House showroom. Social Media Breakfast is a non-profit organization with focus on educating people on networking. More than just social networking, it’s a morning meeting (usually around 7:30 am) to talk about how you can increase business using different social means. The video was shot looking at a window, which doesn’t always make for best picture.

Geekazine and Friends 2009 Predictions

If you like this article, please DIGG it. Thanks! In Part 1, we looked at last years predictions. The numbers weren’t too shabby. This year, we’ve expanded the list to anyone that wanted to contribute. And Contributions I did get. 250 of them. I spent most of Friday night and subsequent morning filtering the list to a couple pages worth of information. We have CEO’s, CTO’s, Marketers, Podcasters and even a Psychic helping us with this years list. Of course at the end of the list I will be adding my 2 cents worth for 2009 on Page 2.  So without any further ado, let’s get started.

Did the Geekazine 2008 Predictions Come True? 0

Did the Geekazine 2008 Predictions Come True?

Wow. It was about a year ago I asked for people to send in thoughts as to what to expect in 2008. I also made some Technology predictions. But the real question was – How far off was I? This is actually part 1 of a 2-part story. This first part reviews the predictions I made last year and how far off I was. Part 2 will have this years predictions, including predictions from CEO’s CTO’s TechPodcasters and even a Psychic. So without any further ado, let’s pick apart my idiocy from last year: OLPC will have some growing pains. The first part of OLPC will be the easiest. Maintaining the machines will be the trick. Microsoft coming onboard will muddy the water, but they might be able to do things like offer a better support network to third world countries.

Love or Hate the iPhone – Where Do You Stand? 1

Love or Hate the iPhone – Where Do You Stand?

It’s been a year and a few months since the first iPhone was sold. Since the release of the 3G model, I’ve been seeing people with iPhones I would have never expected have one. The iPhone has brought up a new way to use the internet, the phone and a computer. Apple is under a lot of scrutiny: AT&T being the sole carrier, the Apps store program take downs and the 3G services being poor. Yet the iPhone still is the 2nd best selling phone behind the Motorola RAZR. Apple itself is set to continue through these tough times. There has been a lot of good and bad said about the iPhone. I have seen a lot of Forum posts, even more twitters and more. I decided to go ahead and ask a small group of people over at Help A Reporter what their thoughts were. I asked...

Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage? 0

Do We Need Comcast to Cap Bandwidth Usage?

Subscribe: iTunes | RSS Subscribe: iTunes | RSSIt would be interesting to see how much bandwidth I go through a month. Uploading shows, ustream channel, downloading software updates and media content.  All of it legally. There are some that decide to use their internet connection without abandon. They download movies, music and computer programs without legally paying for it. I have seen many downloading 4 to 5 items at a time, which at gigabytes at a pop, it’s a lot of data that passes through. And with programs like bittorrent, not only does it download the items, but it turns your computer into a “Seed” in which others can use to pull from. Comcast is working on a model to cap bandwidth per month. For some it won’t be noticeable. For the internet Zealot, they might find it tougher to work and or play. Do we need bandwidth...

Webware put out it’s top 100 and we’re going to go through them and see what was good, what was bad, and what was… well, you know.. Webware is a site dedicated to watching what is popping up out on the internet. Any application that a web developer puts out will be checked out and reported on by this organization. It’s a good thing, too. There are so many out there, it’s tough to keep up. On April 21st, Webware put out the list of the top 100 apps. There were ten categories, each with ten winners. There were 5000 nominees, and 300 apps were chosen as finalists. Over 1.9 million votes were cast to dwindle this list down to 100. According to Webware, most of...

Customer Service – How Social Networking makes the job that much harder.

Subscribe: iTunes | RSS Subscribe: iTunes | RSS*Updated 03-13 -08. See Below Snafu.  Freedictionary.com defines it as “A chaotic or confused situation”. The word SNAFU is an acronym, in which most of it I cannot decode here, so I’ll fudge it a bit. Situation Normal All Fouled Up. If you were to go through a snafu a few years ago with a company, you would most likely grumble to your friends and family and then move on – Little impact on that. However, in this day and age, a Snafu can really come back to hurt. With Social Networking rising 47 percent year to year (according to Nielsen Netratings), this can really give companies a tough time if problems arise. But still, can social networking cause a company hardship because of a single or series of transactions?

The internet grows daily – new websites start, and new websites fall.  Sometimes you can pick up the pieces and turn it into a profit, sometimes it’s just a name in the dust. On Monday, DivX Stage 6 – a popular video website and used to pirate a lot of videos, has decided to close it’s doors on Feb 28th. The site let users upload their favorite videos to share. Some of them were legal, home-made videos. Others were pirated movies and television series. You could watch them right there, or you could download them and watch them later – considering if you had installed the DivX codecs. –Hear the rest on the audio podcast. —...

Weekly Roundup 1 – Will Android beat Godzilla, Mothra?

I am reminded of the old Godzilla movies when I hear “Android”. But in all reality, this is not much different. We just don’t see a cardboard city get demolished by 3 guys dressed in costumes. Google has given themselves not only a humungous undertaking in aquiring Android, but also a new buzzword that has been passed back and forth many times in the last few weeks. Since it’s silent aquisition back in August, the news has been anything but ‘quiet’. Companies getting on the bandwagon, putting in the hours to make this thing a success. But the real question is – Is this something that the massess want, or will this become another piece of diregarded technology. It’s safe to say that everyone wants a phone that can do more than take phone calls. Text messaging has become more viable way of communicating. According to www.cellsigns.com, 79% of the...
