2001 – One problem with technology is that you hit limitations, mostly due to materials used or how small machines can make parts like transistors. For instance, today’s multi-core x-86 processors will eventually be replaced because we won’t be able to put anymore transistors on the die – It’s called “Moores Law”. Intel and AMD work hard to get around this law – which is why x86 technology has been around since the 90’s.
One thing scientists do to circumvent is to change the structure of the transistor. Well, in 2001, Intel launched the TeraHertz – a new transistor that did just that. It used several new materials, including Zirconium Dioxide – which is used to reduce leakage issues. The new transistors brought processing to a new level; High process tasks like facial recognition could be achieved. The TeraHertz also worked on a 0.6 Volts, so it vastly reduced power.
Intel expected this technology to be implemented in 2005. However, as to this date, the TeraHertz transistor has not been implemented in processors.

Of course, with the Holiday season, Technology news slows down a little. We still have a great list of history though. Including this article – On December 26th 1982, TIME Magazine does the unthinkable. They award the “Man of the Year” award for the first time to a non-human being. The PC received the honor this year. It was called the “greatest influence for good or evil.”
Other items in History – Hackers, Hackers, Hackers. The Transistor is demonstrated for the first time. Charles Darwin embarks on his famous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle and SELinux is released to the Open Source Community.
I also realized after the podcast that this marks the 100th Geekazine Quickcast.

On November 20th. 2000, Intel introduced their newest line, and Seventh generation of Pentium core processors. Code named “Willamette”, it became the Pentium 4 processor upon launch. The first processors were in speeds of 1.4 and 1.5 GHz and a new technology called “NetBurst”, which was suppose to carry processors to 10 GHz, until they found an issue that made the processor plateau at 4 GHz.
The processor had it’s problems – transistor power leakages and cooling issues. However the processor has been used in machines up until 2008 when it retired at 3.8 GHz. Add in Hyperthreading and the system could run more efficiantly.
Other notes of the week – Windows 1.0 debuts, the first experiments of the transistor is run, the first Sunday Comics section is printed and Calvin and Hobbes debuts on November 18th 1985.
