We had a lot of friends show up and a bunch of new ones! Brokenshovel was getting a new motherboard, so we talked about the i7 that just came out. We also talked about Apple’s cores and AMD’s struggles.

Someone came on the show concerned they were hacked. We talked about what an IP address does and what the person should do to be more secure.

Finally, in hour #2 we found out that Jerry Yang, CEO of Yahoo! has decided to step down. We talked about who the successor should be. Larry Ellison from Oracle was suggested. I think the best person for the role is Martin Sargent. He has a lot of contacts and can make Yugo a young company again.

All this and a lot more on the LIVE Show.

The Popular News Aggregator service continues to be a great place for people to not only read news, but also contribute to what they think is news. Alexa reports that Digg has been fluctuating around the top 100 to 150 sites being viewed. 52.5% of those viewers are in the US.

The rumor mill is stirring up again that Google has put interest in buying Digg. TechCrunch reports that the “Rumor” is Digg will be selling for $200 million although CEO Jay Adelson denies it. Will this be a good deal for Digg, or can they grow and survive on their own?

Digg started in 2004 by Kevin Rose, Own Byrne, Ron Gorodetzky and Jay Adelson. The idea was to aggregate news items and put popularity to it. People would place a “Digg it” icon on their site in which you could easily send the article to Diggs news feed. If another person liked the site, they would Digg it. Others could just as easily Bury it. Some sites get Dugg so much so quickly, the flooding of viewers takes down the web page. It’s a very powerful medium, and definitely something that Google could use.

There are other sites like this. Fark is one of the oldest in which we talked about in a previous article on Geekazine. Yahoo has their “Buzz”, which is awfully similar to Digg. Reddit, Technorati, Del.icio.us and StumbleUpon all have similar popularity systems. However, Digg seems to be more popular in the US. According to Alexa Del.icio.us, for example, actually has a decent popularity in Germany.

Why would Google want Digg?

Two things here. First is the voting system. It’s not only very sound but also comes with a ton of analytical widgets that can spot trends and keywords. Even more, a large number of people actually have the “Digg” widget located on their sites, some of them have multiple widgets just on one page.

Second, it’s the community. Digg has a lot of members that contribute countless numbers of articles. When a new article is submitted, it must first be verified so it’s not a duplicate. After agreeing it’s not and a quick CAPTCHA verification, it gets put into the Queue. Of course that is where the members really shine. They can rise that article up to the top, or drop it like a mobster in Cement shoes off the East River.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

What does Google gain in this?

Like I said, Digg has some cool systems in place to view trends and keywords. Their “Digg Labs” shows statistics as they happen in cool little flash pages. Trends and Keywords are big for marketing. Specializing ads, pitching companies with almost picture perfect statistics - All can give Google a better advantage in the market today.

It also can be great to see in search results. Maybe an “Article Trends” chart could be called up to find out when that information was most popular. It could definitely be put to use in their Webmaster Tools, Adsense and DoubleClick ventures.

What would that mean to Digg?

One of two things. The Digg Staff would either be incorporated into operations at Google - basically be called Google Digg or DigGoogle: or Google would let Digg look like a separate being and cross platform with them. I would guess the latter is going to happen. Sometime full incorporation means job exodus and loss of creativity. Not to mention members jumping ship to other competitors.

On another front of this, Microsoft put in 11.3 Million in a 3 year advertising deal to Digg. If this acquisition happens, this contract could be axed overnight. If that happens, hey Microsoft - we at Geekazine have some ad spots you can purchase for considerably less. Give me a call.

Of course it won’t be the end of the world for Microsoft. Like I said before, there are other sites that are very similar. Digg will always have competition via Yahoo, Reddit, Technorati, Del.icio.us or on any of the other sites.

Bottom line, this merge would be great for both. Kevin Rose and the gang would get a boost for all the work put into Digg and maybe a shiny new title. Google would get a ranking system and analytical tools which in turn would also be bestowed upon the community of webmasters for their sites. It looks like a good Win Win situation for everyone.

That is, if it’s true…

The big word of the week is “RAIN”. We got a lot of it. It pretty much slowed everything down to a crawl yesterday. The main Interstate was closed for only a few mile stretch, but in order to get everyone to their destination, they had to go on the only alternate route. And that was already crippled because of construction.

So driving up north last night went from a 1 hour trip to 3. Today is not better, for someone apparently caused a big accident on that only road. I think I’ll just fly in….

I’ve been playing with a band called “The Trailer Kings”. Pretty cool stuff - all straightforward cover music. We had fun at the Edge of the Dells last night and tonight it’s the Baja (If I can get to it). Will be lots o fun. I may need a place to crash tonight though….

Some favors came in and so I am doing a little better than I was a few days ago. Job situation still not panning out. Still I am doing well and have Geekazine to keep idol hands.

Talked to AccessoryGeeks.com and they will be helping out with my promotion. All you have to do is listen to my podcast, then call the hotline (608-205-4378) and comment on the show or any of the topics. Everyone that leaves a message will be entered.

I can’t believe what happened with Yahoo this week. It frustrates me that someone with that much power and money can just ____ (fill in the blank) it down the drain. Someone like that should be sent in the corner and all their money should be divided up and given back to us.

Seriously - if it wasn’t for all of us, Yahoo wouldn’t be anything. We should get our money back.

OK. Off that subject. I am looking for a new phone - what should I get? drop me a line, especially if you have a deal on a cool phone. And unless it’s free, I am not buying an iPhone. I DO have AT&T, but I just don’t really want an iPhone. There are better phones out there.

I really like Plurk. Yes, I really do. However, Plurk is too cumbersome to go through. I can’t see who commented on my plurks and I don’t know if someone commented on a plurk I commented on. I like the look of the page, but I would like to be able to choose the way I get the content. I would rather have a twhirl type application for Plurk anyway. I will still go up, but I really urge Plurk to look at the page and give some options.

For those of you who don’t know, I run a few other websites. One is called “WIBands” (www.wibands.com). It’s basically a forum with musicians talking music. Nothing big, but it’s something to keep life going. I updated some stuff, and plan to re-CSS the forum page. The last time I touched the CSS on that page was 2006 and it really needs an updated look. If you have any suggestions, or even want to help out, let me know.

Speaking of which, if you want to help out with any of Geekazine, please let me know. I am always looking for friends that will write, administer or whatever. If you bake a mean batch of cookies, well…. I love cookies. Enough said.

NEWay, that’s it for now. I am playing tonight and tomorrow which means the 5 min show will be later Sun night, and most likely I won’t be able to get to Vocalo again. We’ll see what happens.
Yahoogle? GoogleY? However you want to say it, Yahoo seems to continue to drive the stake in their hearts. Either Jerry Yang has hit a Yahoo midlife crisis or he basically said “If I can’t have it, no one can!”.

This mess ain’t over, either. Just because Microsoft has said they don’t want Yahoo anymore doesn’t mean Carl Icahn is going to back down. Yahoo is falling apart. The rats are leaving the ship. All the trees are still. Pick your metaphor.

First - is the Yahoo Google deal going to hurt or help Yahoo. Right now it’s hurting. Yahoo stock dropped 15% after the deal was made. Yahoo is choosing a bed to sleep in, instead of saying “I’ll take anything”. Being exclusive is nice, but if Google wants to drop Yahoo like a bad habit, they will.

Second - Let’s say that Microsoft is truely out of the hunt. Let’s say that Carl Icahn drops his proxy on July 3rd. (it’s hypothetical) If the waters finally calm down, what does Yahoo have?

(Rod Serling steps out): Picture yourself in a room on the top floor of a house of cards. Your objective is to carefully navigate the house and get out before it collapses upon itself. Here we have Jerry Yang - 39 year old CEO of Yahoo who’s put himself into a predicament he cannot possibly escape from. Add to his problems a bunch of possible disasters that he himself put into place to thwart Microsoft. Now it’s time to get out of the room… and enter…… (well, you get the rest. If you don’t, Google “Rod Serling”).

This is the very reason why Carl Icahn has to continue his fight and do some corporate raiding. I would support him 100%. I don’t have any stock in Yahoo, but I do have Stake in Yahoo. Lots of small companies have stake in Yahoo. Whether it’s email, webpages or some other Yahoo service, if the company falls hard, they all get affected.

Just like the new iPhone predictions, we’re all going to sit on the edge of our seats and see what happens at the proxy battle. I would expect some major changes coming down the pike. And just because Microsoft said “We’re out” doesn’t really mean that they are out. After all, this is the second time Microsoft tried for Yahoo. Business is business and the reality is Yahoo’s site stats are still in the top 5. Who wouldn’t want to take that over?

A lot of tech companies traded like a high stakes poker game. Of course this is not unusal for companies to buy other companies - It is interesting to see who bought what. It makes for the big question: Will the new parent company keep their new child or will we see it in a dumpster next week?

Let’s start with the big one: HP buys EDS. On Tuesday, HP laid down 12.6 Billion to purchase Electronic Data Systems. This is a move to catapult HP into a position to compete with IBM’s markets.

Created in 1962 by Ross Perot - the Billionaire that ran for President in 1992 (and took about 18.9 percent of the vote). Ross Started EDS after departing from IBM. His first big contract was in computerizing Medicare Records from the Government. In 1968 EDS went public and shares went from $16 to $160.

General Motors purchased EDS in 1984 for 2.4 Billion. It grew to over 137 thousand employees in 65 countries. GM split the company into it’s own entity. EDS had more than just General Motors under it’s belt. Government agencies, Millitary Clients in many countries, Bank of America are a few of the clients.

EDS under HP’s belt will give HP the advantage to get into these companies and sell wares as well as outsourced applications. It should be a great partnership, especially since HP has ramped up it’s systems as of late. And HP is no stranger to acquisition. They have bought many a company, including the most notable Compaq back in 2002.

CBS buys CNet It’s not 12.6 Billion, but it’s still more than what I have in my bank account as CBS grabbed up CNet for 1.75 Billion.

CBS has been around since 1927 as a Radio Network and 1939 as a Television Network. CBS stands for “Columbia Broadcasting System”. They have been in the record industry, film production, home video production and even in the Electronics market as they made games for the Atari 2600 and ColecoVision.

CBS was acquired itself by Westinghouse in 1995 for 5.4 Billion. Then in was acquired by Viacom for 37 Billion - a company that produced syndicated CBS material.

CNEt Networks founded in 1993. It was aired on the USA Network and discussed Computers and Technology. CNet nabbed ZDNet in 2000 for 1.6 Billion. It also owns Webshots and TechRepublic.

This merger should put CBS in a great position not only on Television Media, but also in Computer and Print media. CNet has offered News and Reviews on their website as well as popular downloads and it’s own CNet TV.

Wired (CondeNet) Buys Ars Technica Still not what is in my bank account: $25 Million dollars was the price for Ars Technica to Wired.

Wired has been around since 1993 as a print and online media resource. It survived the Dot Com Crash and grew back from there. Ars Technica has been around since 1998 and mainly contained News and Features. The two joining should bring Wired to a new level of expertise.

To show that acquisition is an everyday occurrence, here are a couple other tech companies that were bought out this month:

Cablevision buys Newsday An American Cable Television company, it was founded in 1973 and is the 5th largest cable provider in the US. Newsday is a Pulitzer Prize winning paper in the New York area. It was founded in 1940.

Iron Mountain Buys DocuVault Iron Mountain is a Storage facility in Pennsylvania. The company has been around since 1950. DocuVault takes care of Secure records and document management.

Also, Yahoo bought ‘Inquisitor’, Vodafone acquires ZYB - a contact management service and Ask.com buys Lexico Publishing group. All of these purchases happened in the last week.

In reality, companies purchase others to either increase their sales or make their company look better to sell. Bigger and better is where we always want to go. Sometimes we get some great companies out of it, other times we see a lifetime of work go down the drain.

Just like poker - you got to know when to hold em, know when to fold. Most importantly, you got to always be looking for that “perfect hand”. Then you can bet it all.

<!--[if gte mso 10]>
